Carcass is another band I never stopped to listen to any of their albums despite knowing and liking at least some of their music. I should fix that sometime...
Surgical Steel is an excellent album, but it's a comeback: nothing wrong with comebacks, but to get a good feel for their stuff, have a listen to Symphonies of Sickness. Surgical Steel is more melodic death metal than death metal, but it's a great example of it.
Unleashed are great - their debut is particularly good!
Anyone else feel like giving the new Esoteric a go? 98 minutes of abject misery. I could add a song to the playlist but the shortest number apart from the interlude is 15 minutes. Still, why not. I'm 22 minutes into the first track and it's very good stuff.

Its on my list and I have all of their other music excluding the demo.
I think this is a good place to start for checking them out.
I don't think its being picky, but rather shows their dedication to quality and only having actual metal included in their database which is defined by guidelines which are as objective and clear as possible.
I remember seeing these people live several years ago, I managed to get a +8 for the guestlist. I felt a little guilty but I was very appreciative. Great show it was, too.

In that case I'll replace the playlist track appropriately.

I notice that they have a few [as in, five or six] bands which are officially borderline, not metal as such, but included for their historic significance.
One of these is Deep Purple. I listened to Deep Purple in Rock for the first time a few days ago and was floored. This is heavy stuff for 1970.
Sixslash / descendant_command - I'll add these to the list. I saw an interview with Lemmy last night by Nardwuar. Lemmy looked drunk and could only give one word answers most of the time.

Given the size of the database (currently 131748 bands) its impossible to be perfect and the admins are free to accept bands they feel are important regardless if they are borderline or even metal. One example was Dark Sanctuary which is a neoclassical band and has been included in the archives for a long time, however their most recent album is a metal album so its no longer an issue. As for Otep I am not very familiar with their music, but the two songs posted here seem to me clearly rooted in nu-metal which is a misnomer and were probably rejected for the same reason bands like Limp Bizkit were.

I'm a big fan of Dark Sanctuary and was fortunate enough to be able to promote their final concert in 2009 in a London church. It was an incredible show from an amazingly gifted band. As for the 'metal' album, I don't know the history behind it but I personally think that the label decided to remix [i.e. butcher] a load of their songs with metal versions which then sat on the shelves until they were allowed to release them - however, I have no proof of this and I might be wrong, it's just a hunch I have. I've seen no official word on the album at all, you'll notice that there's nothing on the official site about the release either.
By the way, that 2009 event was recorded for a DVD which unfortunately never saw the light of day for reasons unknown. Fortunately enough, some clever soul managed to get a few tracks on their phone and upload them to Youtube:
I'm aware of Keydragon, but I haven't heard their stuff [will look at the video later]. I really do hope that their work is supposed to be terrible, because their album covers are consistenly some of the worst I've ever seen. That said, I don't know how anyone can make twelve albums just about dragons; they do seem to have a lot of dedication to their cause.

Darkestrah - Embrace of Memory. This female-fronted black metal band from Kyrgyzstan just had their sophomore remastered. It sounds awesome, very natural and genuine, and there is some traditional instrumentation in some of the tracks too.
Note - this is from the older version since the remastered one is not on Youtube as yet:
