Looking for standalone SSH client and X server for windows
im looking for a standalone SSH client and xserver for windows.
somthing i can run from a USB drive and does not need installing on the PC in question. i would like to be able to forward X to whatever machine im working on. but most of the time i have no install rights on the machines, (some of them allredy have putty but no x server :( ) the ssh client needs to support rsa/dsa key logins idealy somthing like putty that does not need installing anyone know of anything sutable? |
something like putty that doesn't need installing? how about putty... i've never "installed" putty... does it have an installer at all?
as for X... i'd actually look at X/cygwin, no reason to look elsewhere really. you can install cygwin to a usb stick easily. http://www.dam.brown.edu/people/sezer/software/cygwin/ and that'll give you a native shell ssh client too. |
sounds great except one thing...
I cant change the registry on the machine i want to use! im a totally unprivalaged user, on a system that for windows i locked down quite well :( |
what needs to change the registry?

quoting the portable cygwin site you linked to

nrrrg. yeah that'll do it. i really doubt there's any X server that'll do that... maybe vnc could be an option instead?

or linux pendrive: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ try : ssh -X IPaddress Enjoy Linux, where almost everthg is made possible for you ! |
For Windows, there is a version of PuTTy optimised for flash drives that doesn't leave a trace on the host machine/device.
For linux, I guess konqueror or something? I think there's a Putty for Linux. |
xming and putty are looking to be the best solution
Putty is allready installed so isnt a problem... xming seems to work (opens an X display) but as yet i cant get it to use the ssh link as windows has firewalled it.. and i cant allow it as i dont have enough rights. looks like i will have to talk the IT guys into letting me run it. (they say that they will consider most software requests and being free is an advantage) and i can make sure that i have a good academic reason to run it.... as for a livecd/usb there is provision in the rules that forbids them :( (you must use the operating system preinstalled on the hard drive) i dont need anything for linux... all the linuxes here are allready running an X server, and have vanilla ssh insalled this is so that i can acsess the linux servers from the computer rooms (and acsess the comp in my room though i wont be telling the IT guys that) |
