Oh , but I disagree here ; We definately need it around as an easy reference of how an OS should NOT be written.

Well DarthTux

"I may be wrong but I don't think it could be illegal to read and write to a filesystem. If so, then Microsoft would have done it with NTFS and FAT. As long as you don't use their code there's nothing they can do."

Depends if the filesystem was... let's say born with copyright protection embedded into the filesystem, you would be circumventing a copyright protection - And that would be illegal regardless of your intentions to read your own files on your own computer... That is if I've understood the "millennium act", correctly.

- Anyone heard of the "This email will self destruct in five seconds..." scheme hailed as a fantastic new security incentive... that'll make legal investigations into cybercrimes and corporate scandals soooooooo much easier... don't you think?

Sorry your honor but those mails seem to have self destructed :)

u understand correctly!!
i believe lexmark "redesigned" their cartridges with some copyright protection to use the DMA to put the generic cartridges and refillers out of business

Nope. WinFS will be built into NTFS as a way of... um... making it better or something?
;)

So it seems that once NTFS Read/Write is perfected, it should work with longhorn.

MS dont always make the newer versions backward compatible, we will just have to wait and see what is going to happen
