Linux software of the century

Hi there all and Best Whishes for this year, which is the first of the decade, which is the 21st of the millenary, which is the 3rd of the A.D. history; SO, could ALL the software developers mind that is greatly time to STOP to provide only SOURCE files as an update/upgrade of their products (installed from a deb or rpm binaries)!?
-
They think that a linux distro/app is honourable to be a little-corner's system just for initiated geeks ...? NO, we expert users made linux spread around the world, and we are still askinkg that:
- all updates be available as binaries (deb and rpm) ALWAYS,
- ALSO that finally ALL OF TOOLS of a graphical desktop be GUI COMPLIANT.

thank you (and god for given us a Linus T.)

Ouch. What about enlightenment?

enorbet 02-04-2021 10:43 PM

ummmm... No thanks. I prefer source. Debs and RPMs... meh.

But txz works well enough for binaries.

OK, so you're running Slackware. Or Arch. And you hear about this new program that could be useful to you, but it isn't in your distro's repository. So you mosey over to the developer's website to download it and guess what! It's only available as a binary .deb or .rpm package.

But that's not a disaster if you use Slackware, because there is a conversion utility called rpm2tgz. So you download the rpm version, convert it to a Slackware .tgz package and install it. And it doesn't work because this binary has been built against different library versions from the ones on your system.

Isn't it wonderful how clever modern technology is! I wonder why we Linux users are so far behind everyone else.

Yeah, and if everybody were to use the same identical software we would only need one distro.

Oh, Wait, We are not all alike! Thus we like different things! We hate being boxed into M$ like channels!

Guess I love the flexibility!! I will pick and choose the distro that fits my needs, and use more than one if I want!

And, BTW, we are far ahead in some areas and behind in others because of the freedom to choose what is important to us instead of being forced into that same cookie cutter mold someone else thinks is right.
