Linux Runs Vosa Vts Devices

Hi all i thought i'd give you guys some brilliant news i have found out this week!!!

I am a vehicle nominated tester here in the uk, all this means is that i am a nominated tester who just does a routine check for our goverment to assure that all vehicles on our roads are to minimum standard of condition (i.e. safe to use on the road)

Well for a couple of years now they have been on about going computerised, which means less paperwork for me, a good access to up to date databases and useful help with known issues and standards of testing for certain vehicles. This also means that the MOT testing (the name of a vehicle test) is linked up with our police force, the vehicle registry office and also the road fund licence office (what we english call the "post office", basically we pay to drive on the roads)which means they can catch out people with "dodgy MOT certificates", people who "clock the odometer" and people that join two smashed up cars or stolen cars ("cut and shuts" and "ringers") to make money !

Ok bit long winded but i thought i'd give all non english LQ readers a low down of how important it is, to our country the MOT actually is,So to cut to the chase I booted up the pc (the VTS device as they have named it) AND WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT !!!!

IT WAS A LINUX BOX!!!!

How chuffed was I, so that is a total of 19,500 vehicle testing stations in the uk all running Opera 6.3 with a lovely VOSA gui running kernel 2.6 (i think)

So I wonder how many other Linux mainframes are running at the other end ,that all 19,500 VTS devices hook up too to get all the information they need to test a vehicle.

So in conclusion!

Well i think this is a massive step for linux in the uk, I was absolutley chuffed that windows didnt get a chance to run one of the biggest operations in the UK !!

And this is all run by SIEMENS these are the guys that have setup all these machines and sorted out all the backup and training to use this glorious piece of equipment! I smile every day i use this machine AND THINK SCREW YOU MICROSOFT! maybe that was a bit harsh.......errr maybe not

well hopefully i will soon have a picture of this Faboulos machine for you all soon

Thanks
Robin

I hope some one has an opinon on this matter it would be nice to know!

p.s (all opinions here are my own and hope it doesnt offend anyone, legal stuff blah blah blah)
