Linux outsells Windows(Malaysia)

Here is an article from a Malaysian local newspapers about the sales of the "PC Gemilang". "PC Gemilang" is a project launched to promote the use of PCs in Malaysia. As it is stated in the article:

Quote:
The PC Gemilang project was kicked off in March with two models: A RM988 PC running a Linux-based operating system and bundled with the OpenOffice productivity suite; and a RM1,147 desktop with the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and Works Suite 2004.
And the result is: Linux outsells Windows!!!

In alot of 3rd world countries and poorer countries Linux is used more than Windows for the simple reason that these places cant afford the fees to run Windows. Brazil is one such country that has alot of Opensource users.

I know this post have been posted sometime ago.

Linux may have outsells Windoze. But, in actually number of users of Linux is much much lesser then Windoze. Why is this so? Cause Windoze of ALL version (including alpha-LongHorn) can be obtained at RM5 == US$1.32.

Those who bought the machine with Linux installed, would probably install Windoze on it when they get home.

However, forum like this (LQ) keeps Linux user alive and growing in all parts of the world. A consolidation of effort for the greater well being of mankind.

At least here, they'll probably keep choosing windows (short-term, at least).

To new users, it's easier to start with Linux, but to people that are heavily tied to Windows due to programs like photoshop, corel draw, and others (IMHO, moving from Office to OpenOffice is waaaay easier than moving from Draw to Gimp), the switch is slower.

BTW, those live-cd distros are a blessing! It's boosting the number of people able to try Linux without major problems (backup, format, install process)

I've read several times in the past, that in the middle east, software piracy is so high that console and PC game makers don't even try to sell stuff over there. And look at it this way. If you know that know one is going to come arrest and/or sue you which is more attractive, 1 game for $50US or 3 games for $10US.

Linux is not hot in Malaysia. I am in Malaysia, I know the real situation. Even that, i am trying to push so hard to my company convincing them to use linux instead of M$, they will think twice.

Right, as if in "rich" countries nobody actually uses illegal copies of Windows.. I've to still find one person over here who had actually paid for the Pro Version of XP... and I mean it...

I am on my way to migrate the server from windows NT4 to linux platform. at this moment, i been successfully get my qmail+postfix running wonderfully. then, as the client side, i have pushed out mozilla thunderbird as the mail client. so far, no pain, no complain. hopefully, i will be getting my samba working in order to subsitute windows NT4 PDC. so far so good. but, in malaysia. windows xp can be easily found. almost 90% of the computer will be the windows box. thus, whenever i meet linux, i feel excited. in my company only my desktop is linux, then the rest of 99.999% are windows.

From the opinions of people having tried to use Linux here , it seems that for them Linux is too "hard to use" rather than "EASY" Windows .
Many of them gave up using Linux and stiil use Windows
EASY here means:
1. easy(cheap) to obtain
2. easy to install
3. easy to operate
4. easy to play games, use other softwares(maybe illegal too)

Only small number of people consistently use Linux here
