Linux Kernel numbering
 

I see that the linux kernel is getting numbered differently. I understand there won't be a 2.7.x development kernel now, correct?

So is the 2.6.11.7 supposed to be considered stable? If you want a stable one are you supposed to wait for 2.6.12?

I remember there was a lot of talk on slashdot, but I couldn't remember how it got worked out in the end.

The original scheme Linus Torvalds had was that a kernel with the second number being odd was a development kernel. So:

2.7.x would be a development tree

and

2.8.x would be the stable tree

I think Linus has recently ditched this scheme and decided to release stable kernels under any numbering scheme as he sees fit.
