linux hopes for the mere mortal

Hi,
All its been a while, I still see that some people are angry about some of fedora cores gaping bugs, consequantly has fedora fixed the bug that wrecks windows partition geometry yet?

I would also like to say that, initially I was wanting to use fedora as a test platform for developing my web site that I purchased e.g setting it all up locally, doing relevant code and them uploading the finished parts however I have decided against this. Dont get me wrong I love the idea of linux and what the developers trying to do but I personally find that when trying to produce something with linuxes many tools it just doesnt cut it. This may be seen as a bit harsh but when Im trying to install the tools (never mind development) there are so many bugs and changes in each application that trying to get them correctly installed and working together becomes a nightmare. Also after months of research when you finally get the applications installed your left wandering what the advantages are having spent all this time on installation and configuration when you could have been half way through your development using stable easy to use applications on other platforms. Also I dont like the fact that you need to practically read 8 books on each piece of software you need to install, Im sure in the future it would be possible to incorparate good functionality and ease of use in one package. Another thing that is the responsability of linux developers is to produce coherent documentation that doesnt assume that every user has a masters degree and that they already know so much,..... providing idiots guide step by step information assuming the user is a complete novice will help their learning immensely.

One final comment that I think worth mentioning is that of the bugzilla service....... this in my opinion is very badly done, all I ever got when I went to this site was a link saying this is a repeat of bug xxxx and after following a multitude of links I would never come to a conclusive answer even though the bug was marked as fixed.

Also I would like to say that I really want linux to do well but would like to see it improving and becoming a worthy alternative to windows. Unfortunately I am not using linux for developing my site as most of the libraries and other apps needed for development just arent stable enough or provide hieroglyphic documentation.

In reference to updating software I must say that yum is a VAST improvement, however I reckon that it can be improved much more by providing a http page with all the updates needed for a individual machine. Yum does this but unfortunately if you need quite a few apps working together as I do , you still end up in dependancy hell.

Please please keep trying to improve linux and try and come up with some informative ways of conveying information and creating stable apps that work seamlessly with other apps.

Keep up the good work and try to make some changes where needed, I am not meaning to sound like a whinger I just would like to see linux becomming more main stream and acceptable by the general computer user and I also know there are many others that feel as I do on this matter.

Regards
Dave

So, what? What is your question? Are you after help or did you just want to state your opinion?

Regardless, it seems to be more of a discussion about Fedora so moving to the Fedora forum seems more suitable.

Since this really isn't to do with Fedora and is more of a critique on Linux as a whole and the way of doing things, I am moving this (again!) to General.
