linux and windows (notice no vs.)

hi guyz

ok, I got this school assignment where I have to speak about windoze and linux for 12 minutes to my info. tech. class. I dont know where to start( maybe from the history??) but I need some good websites to provide that information to me. I dont know much except that linux is a branch of UNIX and windoze has(maybe) evolved from DOS. ( those are all maybe's):p But on the serious note, i want a website which tells me the good and bad of both OS' and it should be neutral too.

1. Linux is not a branch of UNIX - it is a clean-room clone which does not utilize ANY (edit to correct typo)UNIX(end edit) code in its kernel. It just happens to work exactly like UNIX because Linus Torvalds set out from the beginning to create a Minix workalike he could run at home. From a user perspective it is UNIX because it works just like UNIX (and can even run UNIX programs!) but from a technical and legal perspective it is not a UNIX variant.

2. Windows did not evolve from DOS. It just happened to run on top of DOS just like XWindows runs on top of UNIX, Linux, or VMS. With the advent of the NT family of Windows (which includes Windows NT, of course, Windows 2000, and Windows XP), Windows shed DOS completely, aside from the DOS emulation.

Want information on Linux? Just browse this site and you will learn more than you ever cared to know - or even thought about. If you want just a general background of what Linux is, check out http://www.linux.org/info/index.html

As far as finding a single web site which provides an unbiased comparison of both operating systems? You're going to be hard-pressed to find one. Linux zeolots worship Linus Torvalds and consider Bill Gates to be the antichrist, and Windows fanatics worship Bill Gates (they'd "service" him given the chance), think that Windows is the second coming of Jesus Christ and that any open source project, including and ESPECIALLY Linux, is demon-spawn. Just check out any Linux vs. Windows thread here and you will see out-and-out juvenile flame wars that read much like the "canada sucks - no america sucks" threads that have been raging on Usenet for over 15 years. You're going to find FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) propoganda posted by both sites, and both sides have completely lost sight of the fact that computers are merely tools used to solve complex or time-consuming tasks. Picking a hammer when you need a screwdriver or pair of pliers is an idiotic decision, and the same goes for choosing Windows when Linux is more appropriate, or Linux when Windows is the ideal solution.

There's my $.02 which I have repeated ad nauseum in several different forms on this board. :)

I have been working on Windows for past quite some time, and though I worked on linux ocassionally. But as I explored I found Linux was far more stronger on Networking front where as windows sucks. And when it comes to GUI ,simplicity and solving BASIC problems Windows is far ahead of Linux. Once you know your hardware and windows , its time to graduate to better things like Linux

A perfect example of what I alluded to above. ;)

We obviously are not supposed to do your homework for you :), but I suggest using google, there are lots of articles about Linux and UNIX (some are even entire books).

Its very hard to get a very nice centrist view on this subject. (as with most things these days)

Its your job to find the middle yourself. You have to sift through the piles of opinions, slander, and lies. You, ultimately, are the one who has to figure out who is reliable, and who has an agenda.

Good luck on doing your homework. ;)

Do some searches on the history of each and then head on to the strong points of each and what they are best used for and why (linux, stable server, workstation - windows, desktop multimedia, games, supported by game makers and such) that's will give plenty to fill the time....

Check wikipedia, everything is always found on wikipedia. And you will need to do a lot of study since you believe that Linux and Windows actually evolute from DOS... say that during your presentation and peoples will talk and joke about you for quite sometime ;)

This was uncalled for. This is not and will not turn into a Linux vs. Windows vs. Macintosh thread.

I agree, I had a macintosh for a year, that was 5 years back. Game graphics were simply amazing as compared to Windows. With Apple Hardware and Software integration is far too good -kinda of almost true PNP.

Again, context is/was Linux n Windows.

Off the beat, In case Apple takes a proactive approach to develop/contribute to xWindows, result will be [Free Linux-xMacGUI], an unparalleled and unbeatable OS with tons of features.
