Smile Life without Television?

Television is quite popular in "modern" society:

1. What would you do without a television?

2. Do you think Television has an influence on the way people think?

3. ........on the way people feel?

4. ........on the way people act?

I don't watch TV myself. There are only two shows I actually watch (Soprano's and My Name is Earl) and even then, I download them and stream them to XBMC. The whole concept of having to be sitting in front of the TV at such and such a time is really unappealing to me. That is why I like the trend towards on-demand TV and to a lesser extent technology like TiVo, but that still doesn't change the fact that very little of the content being broadcast interests me.

But for others, I think it is a very large part of their lives. People actually get excited about things like "American Idol" or "Lost". I really don't understand it personally, but it is a very wide-spread mindset.

Probably read more. I spend a lot of time watching science and history shows mostly (Discovery and History Channel) so I guess if I didn't learn stuff from watching TV I'd go read about it.

Yes, yes, yes. But it's not really either good or bad, it just is. Like any successful (or probably more correctly, "popular") technology, it affects people's lives on a grand and sometimes unexpected scale. Sure it's bad when some people will devote an entire half-a-year to American Idol, but it was also somewhat thanks to television's influence that the prevailing opinions about the Vietnam war (and arguably, Iraq War II) began to change. It is a tool by which we may either enlighten ourselves, or distract ourselves.

1: Watch the empty space in the corner where the TV used to be.
2 & 3 & 4: Depends on how easily influenced the individual is.

If we didn't have TV, what would we point all our living room furniture at?...

First of all, I don't watch TV too much. I only watch it when I find something interesting, for example on Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel. And now, my answeres:
1. I'd play more on my guitar, read more, do more something useful.
2,3,4: YES!
I think nowdays TV has more influance on people than anything else. Through commersials it is told people what to wear, what to eat, what to do in this and this and this situations, etc. Sometimes I am very angry when I hear in commersials: "It is the best choise you can make" or "this product is better than the other one" and the others like these. They talk like they know better than you, what is good for you. Well, THEY DON'T KNOW!!!!

Arrrhhh! Arrrhhhhhhhh! NO TV!!

(Spent the last 6 months without TV: can't afford the UK TV licence. Think I'm getting withdrawl symptoms)

Time... has been... WAY too productive!

EDIT: I see the OP is from UK too... thinking of not renewing this year?

No, but you still have to get a licence if you have a TV card. Devious little so-and-so's! Took them a little while to cotton onto that one, if I remember rightly...

edit: my terrible spelling.

I like Black and White TV, I'm totally color-blind. unfortunately, they're not as widespread as they used to be. Most tv programmes are shit, anyway

Given over watching TV, currently there's nothing on that I would watch, and when there is it is usually on at an inconvenient time so I end up missing half of it anyway. I only have the 5 terrestrial channels and many of the things I used to watch have moved over to sky or cable.
