Large Hadron collider uses IBM magnetic tape for storage!

They have hard drives too, of course: over 480 petabytes of storage space. But it fills up so quickly that they have to clear the disks to tape every few months.

They like tape because it's so stable. If stored correctly, the data can last intact for decades. They use robots to physically move the tapes around and special software to read them, but in spite of these overheads, it's still the most economical option overall.

IBM & Fujifilm have developed a new magnetic tape technology that can store 30Gb per inch, probably extending the life of tape storage another decade.
