Thumbs up Kinda New!!!

I am not sure where to post this but I would go straight to the point.
I have been in the IT field for 5yrs working more as an Oracle developer . However, I just got a job as the Operations / QA manager. It's a new post and so am I kinda new to it. My boss has high regards for me and specifically requested I join the company despite my being novice to this post.
I am expected to monitor the uptime, throughput; server log files etc. Look for & respond to abnormalities; manage benchmark, manage hosting usuage and check websites for W3C compliance. (There is Linux, MySQL, Perl on all the servers).
However, my boss just asked me for a flowchart / perl script to monitor the following:- -webserver, -Db server, -chat. Where do I start from... I have just 2 hrs to come up with the miracle solution
I would appreciate any advice..

What?

For someone that has taken on the responsibilities of management, that was a surprisingly poor description of your requirement.

Monitor what? Network traffic? Server loading? Current connections? Max connections? Bandwidth usage? Intrusion detection? How many servers? What roles? Network architecture? What OS? What versions? ????

Slow down, take a deep breath, and marshal your thoughts. All too often when cast into a position of responsibility for the first time your first response is to go charging off to change the world. This is almost invariably the wrong thing to do. Take the time to nail down some concrete requirements. Your boss will appreciate a thoughtful and professional approach. Slapping something together in a hurry rarely yields a viable long-term solution.

I must thank you Dragineez for your advice even you may be hard in sending it across. Points taken. Infact I have almost finished my flow chart sketch. You will be amazed at what advice people can give in these forum but it has helped me with coming up with the solution.
Once again, thank you...

As Intended

I know it may have come across as a tad harsh, but that was my intention. You've described your new position as "Operations Manager". You have now graduated to a position where you have very little leeway for error. You will face criticism, sometimes very cruel and biting criticism. This is just. You have now become a leader of men and are honor bound to live up to those responsibilities.

A time will come when you will have to make a hard decision. Perhaps directing the course of the company, perhaps affecting someone's job and livelihood, perhaps removing someone from their job. It comes with the territory. Set a tone of calm professionalism now, then everyone will know what they can expect from you and know you will be fair. Congratulations and good luck.

Thanks guys...
I did draw a flowchart of what I expected and gave him that. He was happy to see this. At least he was able to guide me from there. I guess it was my test to know if I was just another pretty face or had something in my brain...Thus, I would be able to move on from here.
I certainly know that I need more than a brush up in Perl and Linux Admin. Anyway, I know I can come here if I do encounter any programming problems. So have a good day or is it night.

I believe I posted a note of thanks on the site...However, I say it
again, thank you for all your resourceful advice.

I did finally come up with a flowchart of how I believe the
monitoring process should go. Thank God I did make an effort because it was a
kind of test to establish that I was not all beauty without brain and see
how much of a training I may eventually need. So it was worth the while
to have cried out to the forum.

Now, I am trying to write a perl script based on the flowchart I
designed since my boss approved of it. I know it would certainly take more
than two hours but I have come to learn that patience is a virtue...
