mara's right about that... most half-way intelligent observers of this case see it as a fight for free speech, but it's still bigger than that. the right to thought and knowledge is far more fundamental and important than the usual first amendment/censorship squabbles we're used to.

hey... i'm sure a lot of people here are aware that the mpaa is doing everything they can to squelch the decss code. they have a little dummy organization called the dvd-cca that goes around suing as many people as they can who posts the code. we should organize a decss day - where everyone posts the code on thier respective websites/livejournals/chatboards/usenet/ect, emails it to the mpaa and their dummy sites...
if anyone knows how to get that suggested on slashdot, the effect would probably be pretty impressive. kinda like what they did to that twit-head spammer a few weeks ago...

The prosecution claimed that Jon's code would enable DVD piracy, which it does, but unless I'm mistaken, hasn't DVD piracy has been around long before this code emerged? The only difference between Jon and those "pirates", is that he wasn't acting purely for profit. Sure, he was trying to save a few bucks, but the idea of having to buy expensive equipment just to play something that your existing equipment can do is just ridiculous. They should be focusing their attention on these "pirates", for they are the ones causing the real damage.

Nope, it's just the code you need to descramble the signal so that your software for playing dvd's can make sence of it.

Btw it's not copy-protection, scrambling was put there just to make sure thay could use the regions again to spread the markets and the profits and to charge diferently in each region.
