You could actually read the article and click the link...
Then you might read that is uses the 3d video card processor to render the 2d desktop...

Looking Glass looks very nice but is, ultimately, eye candy. I had a quick go of it at an expo and, apart from the fact that you write notes on the back of windows (useful in a way if you send over a pdf and want to let someone know your feelings on the file - although, what's wrong with email?) is ultimately useless.
I had heard it described as more of a way to show what Open Source is capable of, than something to actually use.

It's not eye candy. It's not finished - but it's not eye candy.
It's a real 3D environment and it makes Linux an inexpensive industrial strength rendering environment. It wil also enrich Linux gamers world.

I have a number of screen shots based on my desktop running lg3d http://www.gcclinux.com/linux/viewtopic.php?t=36 , there are some good screen shots and others not so good but still I thing it's much more than eye candy like XavierP mentioned.

I downloaded it and can get it running in a window in Gnome, but not on it's own. It looks nice, but I'll be sticking with Gnome for now.
