.iso size?
i just got medialinux2.
the iso is 702MB. Will this fit on a 700MB cd-r? when i did an md5, it said the file was 719MB. (yes, md5 was correct) whats up wiht this? |
well in common sense one might think that an iso of over 700 megs can't fit into a 700 meg disc, because some of the space on the disc is used for filesystem or something..not much, but still I think that if you can fit it into the disc, you're a magician :)
EDIT: hey but doesn't your burner-app tell you whether it fits in the disc or not?:) |
It will fit as many iso's are that size

Simply put, you need a bigger CDR....
|
no, it fit.
thanks for replies. i decided to brave it, and rick making a coaster. when in my burner dialog, it said my "media info" allowed 703MB. so i got in on wiht less tahn a MG to spare. btw, why dont they just say, 703MB cd-r? i guess 700 is a more rounder number. |
I don't really know.. now you mentioned it, I realized that this is quite common in all memory devices.. (but I haven't heard/ever checked to see that cd-r's would actually have a bit more space than told)
my usb-stick is namely 128 megs but truly not quite that...I recall it was 127,xx but not exactly 128...and one mp3-player I had told me it had 10 gigs of space, but after checking out it appeared to be few megs more :) somehow I've always thought cd's would be exactly as big as they tell...heh, I guess I'm just stupid and didn't think wide enough :) good you got it fit into...I always have bigger discs so that there is also left some unused space (waste :( heh) |
I fit a 710mb image on a 700mb cd. You probably shouldn't worry about the image size for 700mb cds. Most images were meant to fit on them, so a few extra megabytes are nothing to worry about.

True, and in some cases those number even fools us. When I open my Control Panel on WindowsXP (cough), it says that my computer is:
Pentium(R) 1,99 GHZ and I bought it as being a 2,00 GHZ.... If I had money I'd sue, I tell you, I'd sue Intel (same as SCO's philosophy applies here) |
Now, seriously. You are all being fooled by the numbers. If you count as "byte" not MB, a CD-r (700 MB) would fit about 744.000.000 bytes. So I believe that aaa said he fit a 710 mega file in a 700 CD, that's impossible. But it's possible to fit a 710.000.000 byte in a 700 MB CD, since 710 megabytes, would be around 680 MB... It's hard to explain, but try to understand the difference between bit byte and MB :D
|
Oh yeah... those sites often display the size in bytes or kb. Knoppix (the one that appeared to be around 710 to me) shows it in mb now, and it's 700.

cool :)
