When I first heard and saw Windows Vista, i thought the same, that It will be a setback for linux expansion.
But Vista came, and I found it more unbearable than windows xp.
Microsoft spent about 6 years developing and when it was eventually released the industry laughed at it,and was dubbed as a failure.
That i suspect would be the fate of Windows 7.I believe windows 7 will be more 'restrictive' to a user, demand more 'expenditure' and more opaque.
The reason is, that the direction that microsoft took, one might say their 'Business Model' was
"we Microsoft and other Corporations with our wast expertise and resouces decide whats good and bad,and we hold user at bay form the software interface, his role is that of a consumer,Just buy stuff, use it as it is, and dont whine about it...they are brain dead anyways,if they arent they better be".
Linux never had that consumer base, nor will it ever have because it gives User the power and control. It didnt go to 'bed' with corporations because its not one,Corporations go bed with corporations so linux will always have its own clientèle,Just like Macs will have its own.
