Why do you think you can't? Most if not all modern "giant TVs" have not only HDMI inputs but many also have old school VGA type D-Shell inputs or Component inputs. I'm writing this from a 32 Inch LED Vizio 1080p TV that I bought on-the-cheap new for under 200 bux. Vizio stretches the truth about their refresh rate but that only matters much to gamers and it even does OK for that. My ancient T60P Thinkpad even looks quite stunning on it.

I do have a smartphone and use it frequently to surf the web, especially when I'm, say, waiting at a doctor's office or otherwise elsewhere, but, when I do so, I am merely passively consuming. I wouldn't install, say, a banking app on the phone on a bet.

In fact, generally, I install few apps. For example, I won't install the app for my favorite local TV station's news site, when I can visit that site in my browser. I trust the browser (I don't use Google's browser). Why clutter up the phone with apps when the browser works just fine?

I so sometimes send texts and, when I'm not near a computer, emails from the phone if I have to send them now and I'm not near a computer, but generally I don't use it writing documents, administering my website, participating in LQ, or anything else other than passive consumption of bits and bytes.

I have sometimes used it for reading ebooks, usually from Project Gutenberg, but I bought a used Samsung Galaxy 10 from a friend of mine and that's my ebook reader now.

Is the "cloud" going to kill the PC?
This is so loaded and also vague.
  • What's a PC?
  • what's the "cloud"? Seriously, being somewhat technical people we would expect an actual definition of what that means. Your OP does not specify.
  • and what do you mean by "kill"?
FWIW, I go into any large department or electronics store, I see PCs there. Plenty, brand new.
Granted - they might not be the default device anymore - but that doesn't mean they're going away.

And I believe that there's a limit for how much free online storage large providers can give away to lure their victims.
Also legislation seems to be catching up. And people know more about these things nowadays and won't be befuddled so easily. That's not an ideological dream of mine, but a fact: Generations of people that grew up in the so-called information society, are bound to have a better basic understanding of things.

I can only suggest you re-read the OP, and perhaps re-read the responses from the posters who have already responded. Given that the other members that have already posted to this thread seemed to have understood the question you quoted. As this might help you better understand what the question being asked is. You could also look at the poll question, which should give you a good idea since it's the same question as the OP is asking.

This isn't one of the technical forums, so questions here don't have to be closed-ended questions (closed-ended questions meaning questions that may not be open-ended questions, not as in "closed threads") - and therefore *can* be open-ended questions (or what you might call "vague questions").

You say that a lot.
Basically whenever you don't like someone criticizing you.
A wall of words that is just a means for your passive agression.
I can only suggest you stop it if you don't want to derail your own thread.

Also maybe react to the actual content of my post.

While I'm not going to respond to what you said that I've not quoted, for what I would hope are obvious reasons; I started this thread to get other people's opinions, they've given them, others can still give them if they wish, it's up you whether or not you wish to give one. Once again, the question I asked has been clear enough to everyone else that's responded to this thread to date - there's been several responses already too.

Also, it's up to me what I "react to" and what I don't. So no, I'm not going to play 20 questions with you. Again, if you want to give an opinion, then you can, if not, then don't - up to you either way.

I personally don't see anything nebulous about the terms "PC", "cloud" and "kill". As far as I am concerned, a PC is a personal desktop computer/workstation that is static and left in situ for prolonged periods. A cloud is a server/servers which one uploads personal documents to and requires a secure login, these are mostly run by third party companies. Kill, in this context means to kill off, to end the production of, so PCs would no longer be manufactured, they would effectively be a thing of the past and added to the growing list of techno-nostalgia items along with rotary dial phones. They would be obsolete.

ondoho, I do think the content of post #35 is a little unnecessary, personal and somewhat aggressive. I am not saying this to slight you at all, I would not do such a thing, but I think it's worth realising how the post could be viewed, and that it could be quite hurtful to some. I think jsbjsb001's response above is quite fair and diplomatic and it's worth acknowledging that, moving forward and keeping this on topic.

If you accept those definitions, then a laptop is not a PC. And sadly, I think real PCs are becoming a thing of the past. But it's not the cloud that killed them off, it's the laptops!

The question is whether laptops in turn are being killed off by phones and tablets which require the cloud for both processing power and storage, as they don't have much of either themselves.

FWIW, I wasn't thinking nor implying that a laptop is a (desktop) PC.

Although, I'm not sure it's solely the laptop that's "killing off" the (desktop) PC. But I don't totally disagree, and do agree with you to a large extent Hazel.

Closed all free cloud stuff. Got tired of missing isos and fix files.

So I guess my PC killed the cloud in my use case.

My main use computer is a laptop that sits on my desk, a 15.6", plugged into the mains as the battery is dead, this is my 'PC', but I sometimes plug in a 'real' desktop computer to use, but it is only 4"x4"x2" in size, but it is noiseless, which is what attracted me to it originally.

So jbbss0011 and you seem to agree on this definition. Interestingly wikipedia disagrees.
In any case I find hazel's aspect much more important:

The question is whether laptops in turn are being killed off by phones and tablets which require the cloud for both processing power and storage, as they don't have much of either themselves.
There's a development from bigger to smaller. You can even see this in the development of laptops themselves.
And the development of non-portable computers themselves.
I don't see this as a problem as such (though some aspects might be) and I strongly dislike using the term "kill" whenever we see a change.
Like I said, there's still plenty of PCs in shops, both portable and not.

I also wouldn't underestimate this aspect, especially since young people of the "smartphone generation" grow into adults with much more awareness for these things ootb (i.e. the advantages of having data on your own storage vs. the cloud etc.).

I'm still waiting for a viable definition of "The Cloud". I fear there isn't one, beyond "other people's computers".
So how are "other people's computers" killing "other people's computers"?

Let me explain a little more.
Jsb000 does that all the time: whenever criticised (in post #33 that is) they spew out a wall of words that is meant to sound "diplomatic" as you call it, but really they're trying to discredit critical people with it. Essentially telling me that I should not post until I "understood" what this thread is about.
(And of course they're now going to come back to tell me that they didn't mean anything like that at all, how could I assume something like that, maybe I'm imagining things? That's the problem with people who completely deny hidden parts of their personalities, they can always call someone delusional if they try to bring it up)
Granted, this wasn't the worst example of jsbj01's special tactic, but they do it all the time, and not only with me.
You should check some of their posting history.
Another aspect of jbs00100's special tactic: you can be 111% sure that they're going to reply with an even longer wall of words when you start discussing things, never leaving the last word to the opponent, until the unavoidable mod intervention, at which point they probably lean back and think to themselves: "See, I told you so!"
Lysander666, I can't help if you cannot see that the agression goes both ways here, but I'm not going to shut up about it.
I mean in the long run here on LQ, not only this thread.

I also have a 37 inch connected to my old Mini Mac, which I use. But I was referring to bigger then 32 inch. Is there a size limit that will or will not work?

Thanks.

We use 55" TV's at work in most of the conference rooms, we do have auditorium style rooms, but they use a screen and projector setup.
