is ME the worst OS ever! YES it bloody well is!

hi,

i have got an old computer that has been stuck in a room all unplugged and unused for god nows how long so i thought i would have a go on it see what was on it and what OS was on it,

well put it this way the computer is back all unplugged and been used as a dust collecter once again!!

to my surprise window$ ME was on it i couldnt believe i used that for an OS ar M$ sure that the ME doesnt stand for minimal experience! it crashed before i even finished loading google up. it is unbelievably slow even for a 800MHz pc. and when i did get it running you will never believe it, it wouldnt shut down i waited 10 minuets and still nothing! so i opened word 97 to have a look at some old homework and would it hell load anything up properly and thats one word Finlay decided it would load up without crashing. the start menu takes forever to load up and when it did it usualy froze i know i have only been M$ free for a month and when i was using it i was using XP but realy what was i thinking using things like ME, oh and i forgot to mention it didnt like you opening your CDrom drive that gave about 10 error messages saying that the drive was in use when their wasnt even a CD in it!

could ME be the worst OS ever? YES it can! sorry i will rephrase that it is the wors OS ever and not only that it is the worst ever thing to happen in the world of computing in my opinion!

right i am happy now i just needed to moan about how crap ME is

When exactly did Microsoft release ME? Between 98 and 2000 or 2000 and XP? I am curious, because I've never seen anybody using ME anywhere in my experience. Could you post a screenshot of that OS in action so that I can satiate my curiosity? ;)

PS> I use Windows 98SE. It still crashes occasionally, but it's far, far better than the thing that you've described just now.

Yes man... Millenium was the worst OS M$ ever released.. you'd be better to run Win95 than ME!! lol... If anything I would say to run NT4 or 2000 if ya need to run MS...lol

Actually Millenium was ripped off the shelves shortly after it's release.. to only reason a lot of people have it is because it came installed on a very large amount of retail computers... Really it was just a fancy service pack for win98 which broke most things about 98... It was quickly replaced in retail sales with 2000 Pro...

Funny story.. I was at a K-Mart getting some keys made (I hate K-Mart but it's right across the strete from my office) and i was looking at the electronics dept. and I found an old box of ME.. brand new... marked for $20!!!

LOL!!! the box was all faded and looked like it had been there for.. lets see... 4 years?? lol.. how tacky...

having just done the history of ICT at college i found this out you may not believe it though.

first ly the order in which they came out

95
98
98se
2000
ME
XP
(i cant remember when NT4 came out could be 97/8 ish)

but ME isnt actualy a part of the 9x series of windows it is actually i bie product of M$ cutting down all the security out of NT and adding a lot of the features of 9x plus a little 9x codeing, ME was ment to bind the office OS (NT4) and the home OS (9x) together befor xp did this however it never worked i dont know why do you!!!!!......

i cant remember what website's i got this of but i know it was on quit a few!

EDIT // -- what i cant also belive M$ knowingly and purposly released a insecure OS, my opinion is so that people would buy XP

halo14 11-25-2004 11:05 AM

Millenium came out on June 19, 2000 NT4 was release in July of 96.. and Windows 2000 was released December 14, 1999... Which is funny.. because ME still used the old Fat32 file system...

screenshots are relatively pointless... as it looks similar to 98 and 2000...

Anyone heard of ME's 'Active Desktop Recovery' ? i think its called that, i did some googling but it didn't turn up. anyway that would be my quintissential screenshot for ME, a white(!) desktop with a exclamation sign and random nonsensical microsoft text about how the desktop crashed. It seemed to happen all the time on my housemates pc.

Im absolutely convinced ME was designed to be as useless as possible, theres no other explanation for how it could be so bad.

I don't know why you have the computer gathering dust again. Windows Me is a perfect excuse to wipe the drives clean and install some test systems. Pop a *nix in that baby and it will serve you forever.

I will admit that Me is downright terrible. I have never heard someone claim it was a good OS. The computer I use to this very day shipped with Me. I started it up and the introductory video played... telling me how great Me was. It got the the part about how stable it was and locked up the computer. HARD. I had to pull the plug from the wall to get a response.

I restarted it with FreeBSD and never looked back. What a waste.

da_zombie 11-25-2004 01:39 PM

i choose to disagree...we have had Me in our old home PC 800 Mhz since 2000 and the fact is that it has never crashed or BSODed one single time and has never been formatted since 2000..yes i had to see a lot of that active desktop recovery white screen but that OS never crashed believe me..its still running strong and i m praying for it to crash so that i ll put some linux on it.

darkleaf 11-25-2004 01:43 PM

It's the worst but simply any windows thing I touch is bound to crash way too soon...

I've got winme running pretty stable and fast running now but I don't think I'll install more than office and antispyware stuff :D

well that would depend on what you would call a crash...that screen comes up if ur PC hangs up and u have to (CTRL+ALT+DEL)x2 it and reboot or just go for the power button...i think its running for so long coz its been only used by my father who doesnt do much more than play solitaire and chess on it...or it could be that my WinMe edition is from a freak factory batch or something...like i once read in Ripleys believe or not that there was one light bulb in a public place in new york or someplace that was lit up continuously and never had to be changed for a 100 years or so...some uptime!

vasudevadas 11-25-2004 03:20 PM

My brother struggled with Win ME for a while. He hated it, and he thought it stood for Mashup Edition.

acid_kewpie 11-25-2004 03:46 PM

me used fat32 primarily as it was the successor to Win98, whereas 2000 and XP which were either side of ME were built after NT, so came from very different codebases.

SciYro 11-25-2004 04:26 PM

ME is the best example of a true OS that m$ can make, i recomned it to anyone that claims windows makes stable and good OS's ..... meanwhile ill be sure to have my linux Pentium laptop right across from them, and making sure they know I'm having a good time with no crashes, or problems :D

i remember ME, i got that "?" screen sometimes a few times a day, and one thing that really ticked me off, was explorer, for some directory's, the sidebar (the one that show info on files, and disk space if you are in one of the base directories) become a horizontal bar, and it took up to 50% screen space in some directory's, and 90% in others, and worked normally in others (needless to say, when it become horizontal you couldn't scroll to see all the files, the last lines of files were always cut off from view, and it could never get fixed (didn't have install disk .. it was a perinstalled version) .. and it always happened in certain directory's, never failing to mess up, it was a true example of reliability

My next door neighbour used ME for years - very happy with it, little or no problems until very recently when it started to throw toys from the cot. Switched to XP - now very happy. On other hand I know a computer retailer who said " I dont sell Win ME to my friends".

I use Win 98 SE with only a few probs, mostly hardware related rather than OS related. Even Win 95 for ages with little or no probs. I think the major issue was with third party software.

It just seems to be part of the mystery that is Microsoft. ( twilight zone music begins to play )
