IRC network down

I don't know if this is even significant to anyone else, or if I worded it correctly.
However, I've been trying for a couple of hours to get on irc.freenode.net, and
any other IRC server ... but I can't. I can ping them, just can't connect to the
servers.

If you can't get to ANY IRC server, I'd guess that the problem is local to you. Couple of things to check:

Have you tried using a different IRC client?

Are the IRC ports (194/tcp, 194/udp) blocked on your firewall? Is your ISP blocking these ports for any reason?

Cheers

M

The standard IRC port is 6667, and my ISP is blocking it.

Case closed ... sorry, I thought I posted this morning
when I found out.

Really? My /etc/services gives 6665-6669/tcp|udp as being 'IRCU' and 194/tcp|udp as 'Internet Relay Chat Protocol'. I wonder what the difference is.

Anyhow, I can't believe that you would be the only one with an annoying ISP that blocks ports - others must have the same problem which makes me wonder whether there may be an IRC server or gateway out there which works on 80/tcp (http). Might be worth having a search. There may be even a web gateway to IRC - bit like Google Groups is for Usenet.

Asking whether sites or servers are up and down are not Linux technical questions. Moved to General. And irc.freenode.net has worked for me all day, currently on it now..

As I posted earlier, my ISP is blocking port 6667 - which is the standard port that xchat uses
to connect to irc.freenode.net - I just changed to another port.
