To answer the question: I bought an iPhone 5 and a data plan this weekend. I'm waiting for it to arrive. The upgrade is from a Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica, so it's quite an upgrade. |
I thought the megathread gave some good clues already.
BTW this sort of meta talk is better handled via PM IMHO, regardless of this being /General or not. And I sure hope you regulars keep this thread on topic from now on. When the time is right I'll deal with the rest. Thanks in advance. |

2. I have friends who use iPhones, and can recommend cool stuff to do with it. 3. It was one of the best and newest phones offered by my carrier. |
Ok, sweet. Just curious.

I have an iPhone 4s. Before that, I had an HTC Evo 4G.
This may be an unpopular statement, but my experience with iOS has been vastly superior to what I had with Android. Prior to the most recent upgrade, the navigation application which came with the Android phone was better to even the best ones that you coud buy for iOS, but after the maps update in iOS 6, that advantage has disappeared. However, my experience with both platforms has left me longing for a real computer in a similar form factor. There are too many constraints on these commercial platforms for my taste. Too often, I'm left fumbling around with stupid apps just to accomplish something that could easily be achieved with one command in bash. For that reason, I will not be buying an iPhone 5 ... nor will I ever be purchasing another Android device. While Apple's platform is far superior to Google's, neither is suitable for a nerd. I will be building my next "phone" from parts. I don't care if it's heavy or a little more expensive; It will run Slackware, Slackware ARM, or my own "from scratch" Linux or BSD system. It will be useful and unhampered by DRM, software licences, cloud resources, etc. That or I'll pick up someone's feature phone out of the garbage. |

No.

sure why not?
I need phone that fits in my pocket, is fast, stable and takes good pictures. The only way to find out if it's right for me is to buy one and keep it a couple years or until I get a free upgrade from Verizon. I'm also looking at the Galaxy 3 - Droid OS, but I have nothing against iOS 6.
