installed linux and all the hell broke loose!!
 

Sorry for such a Subject.I was not sure what to write and so I wrote so.

My friend installed linux as a dual partition as to window$ 98.Everything went fine.Then he upgraded Window$ 98 to XP.(After installing linux,he didnt check whether everything is allright with window$,he just booted into linux,to see that everything(atleast X) is fine).Then (after upgrading to XP),he booted into XP,and to his horror,his sound card was no more detected.We are not sure whather this has something to do with linux.so what should we do??

I am writing this assuming that we dont have to configure the sound card again after upgrading to XP.It is going to be really tough to find out those sound configuration CDs.

I, too, would recommend checking for sound card drivers that work in XP.
I participated in the XP preview program and followed a lot of XP newsgroups because of that. XP did not install perfectly for a lot of folks.
There were driver problems and incompatable program problems.

Well,I now think that the trouble has got nothing to with linux.(if it is not so,someone correct me).So,my now my question is ,need I configure(reinstall the drivers) the soundcard after a Window$ upgradation??

I never experienced such a problem with Window$ and I dont use windows much these days.So,my window$ knowledge is really limited.

Is the sound chipset an SiS 7012? If it is, you have to download the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website. XP doesn't come with the 7012 drivers.

This problem has nothing to do the linux what so ever. It's XP not supporting the sound card. If there are no drivers for it, the best solution is beying a new soundcard. Or going back to win 98, but who wants that!

I'm also inclined to say that it's windowz problem.
Try going to the sound card manufacturer's website and downloading their latest drivers.

There goes that overexaggerated "Windows has great hardware support" claim I have been hearing about.

I will be glad when XP supports the Audigy so I can get my SBLive! back from my son. :mad:

I am slanting more and more towards believing that all Microsoft software is poo.

This problem has *Absolutely nothing* to do with the linux system...

First, find out what kind of sound card it is.

You can do this through linux, and see what sound modules are loaded, with the command
Usually the name of the sound module will lead you to the model of the card, or at least its chipset.

So then you need to go to the manufacturer's site (or the motherboard manufacturers site, if it's onboard sound) and download the Windows drivers from there.

Not too hard, not a big problem.
