Where's that at? ...and you better not say California before I come over there and whoop your bass.:p I hear they aren't even smart enough to know how to drive over there, which is at least something I don't have to worry about over here in Alabama. Most people here drive fairly well (and YES, we do have cars in Alabama:) ).

...as far as all this fighting, the people in Alabama know how to fight, though we don't do it very often. :D ...at least not as often as those people in New York and California. :p (according to what we get from people like John Rocker :D, as well as our local boys and girls who have been to New York, they all seem to hate it.).

I truly don't think your post here really helps what was going on really.. just a thought. We really don't necessarily need to discuss our fighting abilities, no matter where were located at.

Hi. Well i'm probably a bit too new here to really comment on all this. but i have a few general views on it seen as i'm a linux newbie.

I can perfectly understand why people can get frustrated using linux. It's a whole different animal to windows. Moving from windows to linux is a bit of a shock to the system. Carrying out tasks at a command promt that you're used to carrying out in a nice GUI can make the whole shooting match really daunting and quite intimidating. From my point of view, sometimes the lack a laymens terms makes certain tasks seem out of reach.

I know from my experience so far that I have considered just removing it and carrying on with windows. I spent 4 days just trying to get my modem working, but thanks to a kind soul on here i managed to get it working. But i was at the point where i was ready to just say enough is enough because i knew that after getting that working that i'd have a whole other bunch of things to remedy. Right now i'm trying to patch a new kernel with acpi support and i'm getting nowhere. Its the first time ive done this and i really can't seem to get it to do the simplest things in the process which makes it even more frustrating.

My point is, you can see why some people would want to take the simpler option of using windows. Ok... once configured and running correctly, Linux may be the superior operating system. You have to admit that there are quite valid reasons why people give up though, its not for the faint hearted or the non technical person. I can see how your average home user would just get bogged down and give up. I suppose in some ways its like spag bol. You can buy a jar with a sauce already mixed up for you, or you can get the individual parts and make your own (which if doe right makes a superior product). If you dont have the time or can't cook (like myself) you go for the stuff in a jar.

I really don't like OS snobbery though. each has its own advantages/disadvantages. If somebody gets frustrated with linux and post a thread saying they've had enough and are removing it, wouldn't it be better for people to say 'ya gave it a shot, sorry it didn't work out and hope you feel ready to have another go sometime'? ridiculing them for their choice will only turn them off to coming back to it even more.

Somebody said something about walking in to a GM plant, moaning about the vehicle and saying i'm gunna go buy a ford. that seemed out of order to me. If this is a linux forum then shouldn't it be ok for people to post linux negative posts as well as positive?

Either way, just because somebody chooses to use a different OS doesn't mean that they should be exposed to insults on their intelligence or anything else for that matter. Like everything in life, it's a matter of choice.

It's still a mindset problem... you can't start using Linux with an expectation that it will be something like Windows... Open your mind to accept significant changes in computer usage and your experience will be much better.

Remember when you first used windoze? You had to learn it too. It is harder to relearn or unlearn one thing so that you can learn something new but it can be done. It just takes time.

Azmeen is right though. Open up a few braincells and hang on to your socks. You'll get there.

I was goofing anyway. ...just like Looking Lost. We seem to have started a discussion on who lives the furtherest West. I got a few comebacks I won't use now since he calls Western Europe "sensable" (and America and Britain has this rivalry, just like Alabama and Auburn), as well as the fact that our gigs are a bit off topic.

...as far as people quitting, Linux is a b*tch to get configured. ...though I still think it kicks bass. Right now, I can live without most of the stuff Linux is giving me problems with (IE: playing music from games, playing some games, internet (somewhat, patched :D) etc.). All I can really say is that when I got something serious to do, Linux will bring it and Microsoft just throws debris. The bad thing is that Mandrake 7.2 was really bad when I tried it and I gave up on it for awhile. The next time I dug it out, my PC had crashed and I tried to use it to diagnose the problem, with no luck. Upon buying Mandrake 9, I was able to get the problem diagnosed and thus devise a cure (and breathe new life into my love of Linux).
