If you haven't already Google will give it to you!

If you haven't already received it, Google has "Updated" (there words) there polocies associated with everything they "TOUCH"! In your and mine behalf, because we don't know what we are doing. Does this sound like a small German with a mustache!!

If the above doesn't make sense to you it soon will!

I tried arguing this sort/type of thing before to no avail because of "Ringers", now maybe you will Get it!!!!!!

Now lets here some ringer coments! LOLAL!

This probably doesn't make sense to some/most, but stay tuned, "GOOGLE" will fill you in!

I think Lola is mad about google. Their mission statement is something like don't do bad things or such?

frankbell 11-02-2013 08:56 PM

"Don't do evil," if I remember correctly.

Not sure that they always abide by it, but I'm sure that they think they do.

I have read that they have been working for some time to implement one TOS for all their different services; since they keep buying more stuff, that's a moving target. (Contrast Facebook, which keeps changing it TOS, in my opinion, so as to keep its users confused and off-balance.)

Randicus Draco Albus 11-02-2013 08:58 PM

Google wants to touch everything. Their mission statement is, "All pieces of private information in every nook and crany is ours." Avoid them whenever possible.
And on a technical note,

that person was not German. He was Austrian.

frankbell 11-02-2013 10:07 PM

I do avoid Google as much as I can. I have a Gmail account (comes with the phone) that I don't use, I don't G+, never comment on Google sites, don't use Google search, and so on.

I figure they know everything about me, but I sure as shootin' ain't gonna help them.

What's puzzles me is that persons get all up in arms about NSA surveillance (which is old news to anyone who pays attention), then run naked through Facebook and Google.

At least the government doesn't sell what it collects on the open market.

The thing about google that pisses me off at the moment most is that they removed the ability to turn the filter off in google image search. Google images used to be my #1 stop for porn; now i gotta take my business else where. disappointed. :(

JWJones 11-03-2013 08:26 AM

You know that using Google products and services is a voluntary thing, right? If you don't like their terms, dump 'em. I did, over a year ago. One of the smartest moves I've made, and I don't miss anything.

One could say the same about breathing but if someone taxed Oxygen I am sure you would complain with the rest of us.

As this forum is about Linux I would have thought most contributors here would agree and support the concept of Free Software.

Not Free as in no financial cost but Free as Richard Stallman defines it.

By forum I meant linuxquestions.org not the sub-forum 'general'

Sorry for the confusion.

With distros like Buntu and Mint trying to entice Window's users with an free OS that is as easy to use as Windows, and including any proprietary crap to achieve that goal, many current Linux users are unaware of the philosophy of free software. To them, free simply means no monetary cost.

Mine doesn't have that little thing on the right like that. i have to open up a new page to see the settings. Either way, if i type 'big tits' not one picture is pornographic material. When i check the settings, safe search is apparently already turned off. Maybe it's an Australian thing i don't know. I tried to go to google.com.ca to see if the results are any different there, but i couldn't access it.

Then something is wrong with your Google. If you have a google account as soon as you are signed in and do a search the safe search things comes up on the page with the results.

Perhaps an education program is required as it is a fundamental part of Linux

Randicus Draco Albus 11-04-2013 03:03 AM

It is not is those distros' interest to educate users, especially Ubuntu. If users were educated, they would no longer be locked into the system through ignorance. Yes, the ignorance is intentionally fostered.

Sorry for being off-topic, but this could be considered on-topic by some, since many people would consider the U-distro to be in bed with evil entities like Google. (Amazon link on the desktop, etc.)

I have the same 'safe search' box on a image search with google. Currently in .au, not signed in to google, using iceweasel 24. Using Midori 0.4.3 I have a different page layout, with 'Moderate SafeSearch is on' link.

Surprised you say this - I find the Ubuntu forum quite useful

Randicus Draco Albus 11-04-2013 04:27 AM

Did you ever suggest there was a bug or feature flaw? That will draw a chorus of righteous indignation from forum members enraged that someone dared to suggest Buntu is not perfect. (Been there, done that.)

I need a calendar system that will run on Android but sync some other way that via google. I've found one or two that have a Windows only desktop couterpart but nothing that will work for me. Until then I'm stuck with Google because I need a calendar.

Has anyone used Google chrome lately. My son wanted it because they recommended it at school and it seems to be full of ads. Every time you click on a new link the "related search" comes up at the left but also ads come up in the lower right corner.

looks like the "PC" side is Windows. I want something that I can sync with Linux. I could work out sync ability if I can find an android side that would work. I've found a couple Android calendars which will import/export .ics but you have to manually import/export each time I would sync the file over. If I could find an android calendar that would simply use ics or some other format than I could just work out a script to sync the file myself.

So far I'm found:

- Android replacement calendars which use the Google sync mechanism.
- Android replacement calendars or sync tools which will sync with Outlook or other desktop apps via Windows or Mac desktop software, nothing that will operate on a Linux desktop.
- Android replacement calendars with import/export function, which could work but I'd have to manually import my calendar file each time I copied it over the manually export before copying back to the desktop. So it would have that extra step of manually importing and exporting.

I'd love to get away from relying on google's sync mechanism which has many apple like limitations.

that might be the price to pay to get away from google's sync mechanism

enine 11-05-2013 08:25 AM

So you see why then I'm stuck with a google account. I tried their whole google docs/drive thing, too slow and limited, gmail the same way. I don't really need a google account other than to get my calendar from my phone to thunderbird.

Lessor of two evils, Google vs Microsoft. Google at least doesn't cost me anything compared to the time waster trying to keep a window system somewhat secured.
