What's an IDE controller?

An IDE controller is the bit of kit that interfaces your hard disks (and other IDE devices) with the rest of you system. On the days of old this was a seperate ISA card that plugged into the motherboard, nowdays its build onto the motherboard so you don't end up wasting available IO slots.
