IBM Linux / Open Source Commercial
 

Anyone else catch the IBM / Linux commercial today during football on I think it was FOX... (damned NFL Sunday Ticket I can't tell the difference between CBS and Fox anymore). But it's basically a little boy sitting in an all white room with one person after another telling them whatever they know. For example a pilot telling him how to fly, a plumber telling him it's all about the tools, a computer guy telling him it's all about the user, and my personal favorite Muhammad Ali telling the little boy he's gotta voice his opinion and never step down. Well to make a long story short the little boy is Linux and about how it's all about learning everything and making everything available to everyone. Just wanna know if anyone else saw it, and if so what did you think. GO LIONS!

It's kind of cool it even has a link for mplayer for linux :)

A lengthy commercial (at least a minute) by IBM which boiled down to saying open source enhances everyone/everything through knowledge sharing.
Watch it here.
Can you imagine the cost of that commercial, in the middle of an NFL game and the U.S. Open Championship Game?

well hate to say it but as an advert that really sucks... not a patch on the UBA or Business Binoculars... Nice to see them publically championing it so much though, but that goes without saying....

I think it's like counter-propagation to SCO's crap. Difference is that IBM can spend the money and advertise on it's own while SCO has to rely on the press. No press coverage, no big SCO problem, but too late now.

I can't get mplayer to work (or anything video related) so i read the dialog on there site, sounds like a awesome commercial :) glad to IBM to involved. <3 respect IBM ;) big up

I actually like the commercial. It has that kind of "AI" feel to it. On the other hand, the "business" stuff was a downer. Stilll, other than that, the general idea made me fell good.

It's been up for quite a while now; it's a good description of Linux in general. Reminds me of discussions in LQ: the older & more experienced, helping out the 'younger' ones eager to learn.

Seen it, been around for months along with several threads on it already that have been moved to General where this one will be moved since this is more suitable in the General forum.

heh heh. i agree. plugin checks are annoying at best. ironic that this ibm/linux commercial didn't take into account linux users running either the mplayer mozilla or xine-mozilla plugin. watching trailers at apple.com posed no problem... :rolleyes:

u should bear it in mind that in a whole heap of places, this is not considered swearing or bad language and that most people who say it dont even know that it is swearing by others.:twocents:

the xp commercial is fricking hilarious. i don't know why so many here in the states are so inclined not to put things like that in commercials.

the linux one though is good, to bad they had to have all of the weird commentaries in it. they should have started out with the kid and then had him grow older through out the commercial and show that it's not just a kid anymore, that's it's evolving into something that is greater than just a single entity. then they could have had a bigger impact on the businesses out there. if i was a corporate honcho, and seen that commercial, i wouldn't want my systems running linux. i would think that they have a long way to go before they get to a mature enough level to actually do something.

I just saw my first Linux commercial. It was just on a few minutes ago on CNN. With this kid, who is learning. It's a little wierd, but it's about Linux.
All the other commercials mentioned Linux, but didn't write it on the screen, or focus on it. This is all about Linux... I like IBM now.

IBM's been a really cool ally for Linux in the last 5-7 years. Don't ever forget that they are a huge imperialist corporation though. They are doing great things for us OpenSource software users, but let's not fall so in love with them that we forget that their bottom line may one day interfere with what's right for OpenSource....and being a corporation, their bottom line must always win out.

you can't hate something or refuse to have anything to do with them just because they're commercial.
open source is great, and if there is an open-source alternative to a commercial product, i'll use it, but you have to live in a real world, not everyone can afford to live off donations, people have to make money.
If IBM or anybody else wants to sell a linux-based product or a product for linux, then that's great, they are just making more software available for linux, as long as it complies with the GPL and doesn't completely rape open-source software then more power to them.
corporations like IBM, Apple, they are good for open-source.
corprations like M$ who just want to dominate the market and muscle out everybody else are bad for open-source, the economy, and the general public.

IBM is a good company they have been pushing Linux ever since they gave up on OS/2. If you buy a personal computer off of them you will get it with a Microsoft product on it but as for B2B sales they all most always (unless the customer wants Microsoft) try to push Linux. Lets face it the more IBM linux that they sell to customers the more revinue that they make off of the support of the software. IBM products that i know run on linux are

earmyu - This is the army online collage. It is kinda cool. you get a laptop a gread deal on your credit price and you take it where ever you go. There are people in Iraq and Afganastan that have there laptops and are woking on there BS/BA

IRS e-tranning - this is a program that the IRS uses to train it's people.

DHSS - the U.K health care system.

Intell e-learnning - this is used to train Intell staff on things such as Six-Sigma.

Food Stamp database - this was acctuailly done by PWC but when IBM bought there consulting division they took it over.

I am telling you IBM is taking over some major voids in the market and they are taking Linux with them. As for IBM gobbling up Linux and hindering open source there is a company named SCO that is sueing IBM over Linux. They say that there is some of there Unix code in the IBM linux product. SCO is the real enemy of open source. they have sent bills to IBM, Redhat, Suse and any other Linux vender that you can think of. I know anout the IBM case because my uncle is an Exc. there. They sent them a bill for $900 for every Linux server that the company has sold to a customer. I hate to say this but SCO is on the verge of Chapter 7 and the IBM leagle department are going to run these f*&kers in to the ground to protect the open source concept because they profit verry well off of it.

Well IBM also devised the Hollerith numbers. Those are the numbers that the Jews had tattooed on their hands and forearms during WWII. Tom Watson was very friendly with the Nazi regime...a fact that IBM doesn't talk much about since it happened.

I never said IBM was all bad, despite some horrible choices in the past, or that the things they were doing for OSS weren't great. But I was saying that people should temper their zeal for any big corporation that is helping out with something that started as an alternative to corporate offerings that were available at the time --- like Linux did. I think it's great that IBM is supporting Linux so much. But I don't let my guard down when it comes to anything that comes from such a huge, global corporate entity.

Well as far as the Hollicost, i don't think that many people walked away from that with clean hands. I understand caution twards large business. They have had a habbit of doing a 180 when it is good for the bottom line but if you look in to the SCO case IBM is pooring a ton of cash in to protection open source. of course because it is good for them now. go to www.cnbc.com and look up the SCO case. it is intresting what big blue is doing.

For the first point, IBM's ads have put pressure on others to support Linux. For instance, here in the Detroit area, Dell's slamming the airwaves with commercials, for no other reason than to be part of the mix as automakers switch over.

As for the "imperialist" thing, it's a joke. The desire for power is part of human nature. Not a pretty part, but still important. It's funny how people will be offended by pigeonholes like "black" "indian", etc., but won't think twice about doing the same towards people and organizations they don't agree with.

Remember, stereotypes are a tool of ignorance. Anyone that understands human dynamics on the most basic level understands that life isn't black and white. For example, nobody is truly "for abortion". Nobody wants to see an unborn child killed. On the other hand, most people understand that there are other factors to consider, and that making it illegal doesn't resolve those problems.

Instead of labeling IBM as imperialist, if you have an issue or a set of issues with IBM, list those issues with your praise for their support of Linux. In other words, voice your opinion in a meaningful way. You aren't achieving anything with stereotypes. In reality, you're just turning away eyes and ears that might agree with some of your viewpoints. Most people, even companies, want to know what the world thinks about them (and will generally adjust themselves accordingly--look at MS for recent examples, ineffective examples, but still relevent), but if you allow your voice to be pigeonholed by your terminology, you do yourself and the rest of us a great disservice.

Hey, just wanted to see who else has seen it. I was getting ready for classes the other day, about two weeks ago, and I saw a commercial that seemed to be a movie preview. It talks about a boy, and his hidden power etc... And then, I almost choked on my tooth brush when it turned out to be an IBM commercial and in huge all caps lettering accross the screen I saw LINUX I was so amazed to see a linux commercial on, I think it was VH1 or MTV, but it wasn't a small channel! Just wanted to see if others had seen it, it made me feel great!!
