i want to be a moderator

how does one become a mod?

are they appointed, or elected?

i suppose its a job reserved for those who have been here awhile.

Whitehat 01-29-2004 08:58 PM

You have got to be kidding me.....

I believe they are selected by Jeremy.

questionasker 01-29-2004 10:18 PM

i guess its just the status symbol.

"i have the power to delete your post, and move it to the right spot"
muhahahaha

i guess i would only qualify for the off-topic forum.
oh well...

They are also hand picked by Jeremy the majority of the time when the need for a new moderator for a particular forum, etc.

Nowadays Jeremy does ask the current mods for suggestions in the choosing process and yes, most of the time the one's recommended are the ones who have been around for a while, display Linux knowledge in the forum they will be chosen for or assigned to and have shown the abilities to be mod material, etc. In the end though, Jeremy has full control over who's a mod or not.

Just a side note, mods don't have ability to delete posts and with that type of attitude, you won't ever become mod if your doing it for the pleasure of having powers.. ;)

Being a mod is dedicating alot of time to this site as well. When accepting, you should be aware of the duties assigned to you.

Cheers.

Just FYI :
On most messageboards , mods DO have the abillity to delete posts/threads.

I guess that's mainly because the Admins of those boards are either too lazy to set the rights for their mods , or unaware of the possibillities.

as the trickykid says, It's down to jeremy.

after all, the sites' "his baby".

apart from that, I would say that he does a pretty damn good job of picking suitable people to mod the site.

Jeremy and the mods, keep up the good work.

regards

John

trickykid, you make it sound like a big job ;)
maybe a little too hard for me.

at least for now,...
b.t.w. not much linux knowledge is required for the "general" forum ;)

ill try to start exhibiting some of my linux knowledge in more useful froums.

"i have the power..." was just an expression. no, i wouldnt be doing it just for that reason.

edit: i guess they are appointed, then. :)

Not really a big job but I think anyone who accepts it should dedicate effort and time into it. If your not going to contribute and do what's assigned to you, don't accept it if offered. :)

questionasker 01-30-2004 11:48 AM

no ones ever going to offer a moderator job to me, it was just wondering how a user became a mod.

btw, how many mods are on this site now?- 20something?

Counting them from the main forum page, looks as if we have 17 now.

Regards.

questionasker 01-30-2004 12:15 PM

i tried counting, but a couple were on 2 or more forums, i lost count. ;)

trickykid 01-30-2004 12:15 PM

Also in the 17, our newly appointed mod just a few minutes ago, XavierP.

Neither. VBulletin is just pretty weak.

That's why the version here has been hacked up so much by Jeremy, it can probably be called JeremyBulletin.. ;)
