I urgently need to say that freedesktop menus are a piece of crap.

Working on menus since april.

Now i can tell, if they wanted to bloat menus and disgust any wm tweakers, they succeeded.

acid_kewpie 10-28-2011 04:30 AM

yeah... not a question.

Linux.tar.gz 10-28-2011 11:53 AM

I know, but i just didn't want to pull my hair off... I preferred to scream here :/

acid_kewpie 10-28-2011 12:40 PM

please don't. Use General if you really think you have to.

XavierP 10-28-2011 06:03 PM

Good idea. Let me be of some assistance with that...

Linux.tar.gz 10-28-2012 04:02 AM

I'm back with creating my own custom menus.

This is a total mess, the structure of the menu files is totally incoherent and illogical.
Some things are forced to be loaded, the you have to exclude one by one entries.
I spent hours setting up a file, finally realizing that the result is just a piece of garbage.

Please, freedesktop trojan guys, listen to me:
Definitely STOP to work on Linux desktop. Do something else useful for us, like exploring the south pole, or experience life on a desert island.

It sounds like you should offer yourself as a developer, and get your work (which you give away for free for the good of the community) attacked and criticized by others.

We are not freedesktop. There's no point telling us this, it doesn't add anything to LQ.org

move to QT4

problem solved

Sometimes, I guess, ya gotta vent.

"There, there now. Do you feel better? If it helps, here's a bottle of EverClear ... ;) ... sure works well for me, in times like this."

:tisk: P.S.: I'm joking. That stuff (pure grain alcohol) is literally deadly.) :tisk:

To look at the actual problem, it sounds like you're editing configuration files. Sometimes, all you need to do is alter the category in the .desktop file for the program.

Perhaps you could elaborate on that a little bit more, David? What sort of "alterations of the category" would you make, and how? Examples, etc.?

gnashley 10-30-2012 04:12 AM

Each desktop file has a variable called 'Categories' which can hold one or more values. The program will show up in each category(menu or sub-menu). Want less duplication? Edit the files to remove categories.

On the other hand, I also find the menuing system tedious...

It's the best Linux forums, so i presume that my opinion can make more people think about it than when i pull my hair off alone.

I already figured out that.

A bit complicated to explain, i wanted to remove useless parts, and change categories order.
The result was all removed, or all messed up, or the reversed result.

Thanks.
I never imagined that chaos can be documented...
