i need to applications to run faster
hi all, i am new to linux.. no not a newbie(well may be lol)
i am here for around 2-3 months HERE is my PC configuration P3 1 ghz, 256 mb ram, 10000 rpm 40gb hdd. i have tried rh9 for my first install it was very easy for me.. but the problem is the performance it boots very slowly..some of friends told your hdd may be dieing so i changed my hdd to new 10000 rpm one so then i had same problem so i switched to slackware. due to my problem with the display settings i cant get into the X .. ok i left it then i tried some dragon linux that was a crap in my pc again.. crashed now and then then i used peanut linux.. which is the fastest one to me but the author was busy to upgrade it.. linux works very fast in my pc i can run the applications in a click and in seconds after i click .. i liked it much but.. the problem is that i cant install and get apps work.. because of issues with packages and unsatisfied dependices,,. so i decided to leave this linux till the author comes back and write a new version to help people like me. then came the fedora.. i downloaded and worked in it it works .. detects all hardwares . no problem for me in this side.but again the performance of gnome or kde is disappointing i cant run any apps if i click home icon it takes some 5-10 for window to appear konquorer is too slow to start .. but now i am running and posting from this OS is there anyway to make this OS FAST like PEANUT will kernel recompilation help lot???? to my knowledge i stopped most of services which are unwanted i dont run httpd or mysqld i need some linux guys to help out me to chose a better linux or to tweak the fedora and 2 questions about mandrake 1. can i install the mandrake after downloading iso to hdd like redhat? 2. will mandrake run in my pc (piii )? thank you for reading and help ing me |

And then, the 1ghz processor also doesnt help, a 10000rpm drive will not increase your cpu power, a 1ghz isnt top notch, its fine for a basic workstation, but when you start playing the latest latest games on it, it will not be happy. My suggestion? Get 256 mb more of ram, and maybe a 2.0 p4, you can get a reasonably good deal on them these days. Im not sure if a celery is faster than a 1 ghz p3 but it may well be, you can get a celery 2.4 for 70 bucks these days so go for that. (btw, celery is a Intel Celeron) A 10000 rpm hd is only for top notch comps, it is not the useful in your case because your cpu probably cant handle the speeds with your old one, let alone even faster. Unless of course, your old one was 5400rpm. A 7200 rpm one would be fine for your box. I dont like 10000 rpm ones, they run way to hot. I would make a RAID instead, just as good speed but a lot lot cheaper :) I would suggest for a disto to use slackware, that is the best for speed IMHO. Mandrake is not a speedy one, and I too like peanut :) But if you want speed, go slack, if you want a comprehensive OS with tons of extras and crapola, get mandrake. You say you had problems, but you can work them out. Try xfree86setup at the start (I think thats the command). There are a lot of ways to fix it and once you get it going it will be the best. If you really want to keep fedora (which is quite nice) and want it a lot faster, then get another desktop manager. Instead of GNOME, download XFCe or Blackbox. Allthough blackbox is VERY minimalistic and not that pretty, it is speedy. xfce is more pretty and also very fast. Anyhow, its your choice. I dont happen to like mandrake, but that is just me. :) |
I happen to like Mandrake.... very fast and using KDE very pretty. You don't have to install anything you dont want to, so if you dont want the "crapola", don't install it :-)

AMD 800 512M ram forget the vid either 64 or 32M, but either way this system is no powerhouse and it runs Gnome extreemly fast. heck ihave an old PII 330 with roughly 300M ram and a 4M vid card that runs RH9 smoothly. you have something running amock in the background that is chewing up your system recources and needs to be kill -9 (i think that is the ub3r kill command) pronto. then debug from there. |

but i can get peanut work at a great speed than the other distro .. thats what is expect from fedora or anything .. so i should give a try to freebsd as another friend said i will try it then.. and is there any new info for next releaseof peanut? by the way i dont need any hell games or anything.. I just need konqueror , gaim , some word processor run like WINDOWS one more note.. even the gnome is not wrking fast.. i can play the TUX RACER at top speed and quality if any one can help me i will post the results of ps -aux or anything like that wil that help me anything? |
Did you go into the settings->server->services and turn off all the crap?
Root around in the start menu, and there is a services thing in fedora, you can there turn off tons of the useless things. Yes I know, but Peanut is minamalistic, not a full blasted disto. It is the bare minimum, an aveage fedora install takes a couple gigs, an average peanut install takes 800 megs. Big diffy, no? It is like comparing a sandwitch to an 8 course meal, of course it will take longer. Fedora is a full blown OS, as is Mandrake (which I hate, along with SuSE) so it stands to reason that it will be slower. And as I said, dont use GNOME, use Blackbox. It is minamalistic and very fast. And you missed what I said, you dont need a 10000rpm hdd to make your system go faster, it actually wont help it any more than a 7200. It is your cpu atm that is too slow, making data transfers faster wont increase your cpu. Your friend was wrong. |
sorry i posted my hdd speed wrong ..
its 7200 right now first i had 5xxx then now its 7200 i turned all the fedora services and i am going to try what you said i will try black box.. is ther any os which have black box as its default thingy? |
I would use Slackware. Once you get it installed, run xf86config and then once you get through that, X will work. Also, run netconfig, and if you have a LAN or homenetwork or anything, use DHCP, then your network settings are all set, so you'd just need to initialize it.

This is my view, you want me to pay for a product in order to use another product which I paid for? Not worth it if you ask me. |
You don't need winex to run games. Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 run fine. So does Neverwinter Nights. Half-life can be run under regular wine which comes with some distros.
Anyway, I agree to do a TOP and check what's running crazy. If you don't need that service kill it and unistall that app. |
