Lightbulb I need 1 more gig RAM

Hi All

A simple question, my hardware in sig, I'm gearing up for 1 more gig of RAM, should I? I mean will it really benefit, especially in my 64bit zone? ATM everything is perfect, but I've been reading a lot lately that 64bit rocks on more RAM, so I just thought what do you guys advise?

And yeah, I should tell here I'm a 3D artist heavily working on it both in Windows and Linux and yes I think more RAM should help here IMHO.

So, shall I buy?

Waiting for suggestions
TIA

The 'sweet spot' is 4-GB of RAM and at least a video interface with 512-MB of RAM (unshared).

The average user doesn't need more than 1GB of RAM. However, if you are constantly working on 3D modeling, then the extra 1GB should help especially with complicated ray traces and other renders. If you make money from your 3D modeling then you can write it off as a business expense and at <$100 it's not a bad way to speed up your computer. However, before you take the plunge, you should verify that your computer is already using all of the memory available to it. You can do this by using the Task Manager in Windows (ctrl-alt-del brings it up), and on Linux you can use a variety of different programs, but running "top" in a terminal is one the easiest.

Thanks for the replies guys, yes 4GB is the sweet spot and that's my target along with a SLI based graphic solution but not financially feasible right now. I'll go for the extra 1GB

Are you actually getting a lot of swap usage in anything you do?

I have a 64bit CPU as well and recently dropped a second gig of RAM into my machine to bump it from 1 to 2. Since doing this several days ago I have noticed very little change. My programs start faster. Beryl is a tad smoother than it used to be. Especially with intensive effects like the burn effect on full screen windows.

Unlike you though I don't do a lot of video or picture editing. Though I can tell you that what little pic editing I do in the GIMP and Inkscape has noticeably improved. Most of my pics are no more than say 16M and playing with them is much smoother now.

So yeah, if your just a regular user like myself, the second gig is nice but you can wait if you want. On the other hand if digital content is something you play with regularly, your missing out.

Interesting thread! My 1.5 Athlon XP chugs along nicely on 256MB RAM. I don't do 3D anything but have considered boosting my RAM. How much would be useful for my processor without being overkill?

man my pentium 3 have 1 G
more RAM is the way to go you can get programs that are suppose to run on newer hardware to run on earlier machines with more ram
anyway i 'm planning to get an amd64 x2 or something close during the year and for sure it will get at least 4 G

To mikieboy: 512-MB would be good, but you should consider 1-GB if possible/feasible.

Very likely, my P111 had 512Mb. But don't forget that, depending on your motherboard, my RAM could be up to around 10x as fast as yours and is therefore likely to be much more efficient. I do however recognise that my 3.5 year old PC is light on RAM by current standards. Still, I do have a tight budget and memory costs money.

My guess is that since your running a PIII the ram you'll need when you upgrade should be fairly cheap. After all, your not going to need 800mhz DDR2.

I'm running a Athlon XP with 400mhz DDR. It's evildarknight who has the PIII.

i' m not upgrading this machine more than it is and i just posted the spec just to show my experience of increasing ram
with my P III 1G i was able to run doom 3 and quake 4 with all options at minimum
And 133 mhz SDRAM is very expensive and very rare compared to 800mhz DDR2

Really? I don't find that to be the case at all. Does it have something to do with where your from?
