I just thought this was gratifying to a Linux user

Has anyone seen this? A columnist shouting Linux out...https://www.americanthinker.com/arti..._big_tech.html

Particularly this quotation:
Quote:
Ditch Windows and Mac operating systems in favor of Linux. This may seem the most difficult and disruptive action required of your Big Tech jailbreak but it’s far less so than you may think and absolutely essential. By allowing Microsoft and Apple control of your computing ecosystem you allow them to track your activities and collect private information. Once the government has labeled dissent as “domestic terrorism,” you can bet that the lefties in Redmond and Cupertino will be there to help monitor your political beliefs.

Linux is a free, stable, secure, open-source operating system not controlled by Big Tech. Its code is constantly monitored by thousands of privacy zealots on the watch for any backdoors or other vulnerabilities that would allow Big Tech or Big Brother to gain access. There are thousands of free, open-source applications that can meet the needs of a vast majority of users and a huge side benefit is there is no financial motivation to constantly make your hardware and software programs obsolete like Windows and especially Macintosh. You can even give new life to old computers that have been rendered worthless by Microsoft and Apple.
It's "too bad" for me that I can't have the satisfaction now of doing those things--because I already received it, having dumped Windows permanently fifteen years ago (after fooling around with Linux for a few years). I have only to explore the writer's browser recommendation.

What I've really got to make myself stop doing is visiting Youtube. I'm not one of those Youtube obsessives who views it on their phone and gets their news off it (I don't even have a data plan for my phone, and don't believe in using my phone for anything but communication). It's just that since Google owns Youtube, you must have a Google account in order to view Youtube. Just haven't kicked the habit yet. At least I don't use Gmail for personal e-mail anymore.

What do you do view that requires a google account?
I frequently view videos on youtube and don't have, and won't have, a google account.

It's a right wing political blog with a clear agenda.

The fact that it refers to Microsoft and Apple as "lefties" tells you all you need to know.

Why do you need some political blog to "confirm your decision" to use Linux ? It suggests that you weren't sure to begin with.

I don't need someone who doesn't know what they're talking about to begin with to tell me switching to Linux was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

You actually don't need a Google account just "to view Youtube" at all - you only need a Google account to post videos to YouTube. So you are incorrect. And who says that just because you use Linux you can't use Youtube? Where do you get this nonsense from ?

Dumped Microsoft many years ago (1999) mainly because I couldn't afford to buy extra software - best decision I ever made - I could, at last, attempt proper (C) programming, because I could use the software for free.

Once I knew a bit about Linux, I started helping out on forums - this was the way that I could pay back those who freely gave me the software to use.

I use 'old' computers, & I install & give away computers with Linux installed on them, when I have spares to do so.

Long live our freedom to do so.....

Someone needs to tell the author that these terrible leftist plotters of "Big Tech" are actually heavily involved with, contributing to and the primary funders of Linux as well. These evil leftist billionaires such as Gates, Bezos and Zuckerberg, who are secretly plotting to redistribute all of their wealth and establish free healthcare in the US and then nationalise MS/Faecebook/Amazon are clearly behind all this. They should be informed, as they've been monstrously deceived into promoting yet more leftist software.

The home page of the site "American Thinker" the OP's linked article is from says it all - it's clearly a right-wing site (I'd say a FAR-right-wing site myself).

It's always amazing how people keep getting sucked right into this stuff.

So you were right on the money...

I wouldn't say that.

It's clearly a fanatical conspiracy theorist site. The ideals it espouses are not right wing.

While I agree with you on that point...

I beg to differ. If you believe the Democratic party in the US of A are the "left" with the Republican party being the "right", then clearly that site is in fact hosting articles supporting the Republican party's far-right - they sure as hell aren't supporting the Democrats or the "left".

And that kind of nonsense in the articles hosted on that same site is typical far-right nonsense and conspiracy theories.

The same as the "left" and the "right" refer to two different sides of the political spectrum and not to the "center" of it.

In any case, that isn't the sort of site the "Linux community" needs "singing it's praises" as it were. So why the OP would highlight an article from such a source as "gratifying" to any decent Linux user I don't pretend to know...

Well I'm certainly no expert, but I have studied a little bit of politics and history.

People who speak of "the left" and "the right" tend to be the ones who seek to divide a society.

I'll agree with you on that.
