I just bought a Dell preloaded with Ubuntu...
...and it's awesome. That is all.

I see you located in Canada, did you buy it here or drag it up from the US? I guess what I'm asking is, has Dell seen the light here? Last time I asked Dell Canada they knew nothing of the Ubuntu systems.

They're selling them from now; if you type "ubuntu" in the search box there you will find them. They're still not allowed to advertise it though due to their contract with MS.

Since it pre-loaded, it is possible that some tuning / paparmeter changes weer done during the installation (pre-loading). As such, it may not be a straight out of the box instalaltion - if you ever have to redo it.

Would you like to check it up.

What type of CD, support, value pack extensions come pre-loaded?

As the market for Linux grows and matures, I expect this will become more important.

I think all of the Dell drivers are included in the regular Ubuntu distribution, but this one came with LinDVD preinstalled as well. There was also a regular Ubuntu DVD in the box and a Dell driver restore CD for the built-in webcam.

Maybe there are more differences but I can't tell.

I suppose I'll mention some nice touches:

- All of the hardware is supported (of course), and everything works including webcam, digital mic, card reader, fingerprint reader (need to use ThinkFinger), and all of the media buttons.

- Compiz works brilliantly using the nvidia blob (I ordered the nvidia card, though the default is an Intel integrated something using the open source driver)

- Hibernate works reliably but "suspend" seems to have some issues with the nvidia driver

- There is no "Designed for Windows" sticker!!! (instead I have "n-series"), though there is still the windows logo key on the keyboard

- One thing is not working: I have a button for Dell media direct which is supposed to let you play DVDs and such without starting an OS. Pressing this starts Ubuntu just as the power key does. I haven't looked for a solution to this yet...

I may have "broken" some of these things myself, since one of the first things I did was upgrade Ubuntu to 8.04 from the pre-installed 7.10.

Sounds good, I'll have a look at their web site.
