I am wanting to consult for schools...how do you know you are ready?

Hello everyone!

A tiny bit of history. I'm working for a survival job having just finished a MA. (you could say in the education field, but its with 3 year olds. I started looking for something else on my second lunch break...Its been three months.

Lately, I've been pushing myself a bit to learn Linux better. I am up at 3:00AM-8:00 AM Monday-Friday. I want something that could be like a career in education and technology.

I guess consulting is in my near future. How do you know you are "ready" for consulting? How much of what kind of knowledge would I need to have, and what would I need to know?

Thank you for your insight.

You are ready when you can get someone to pay you to do things you know how to do. Getting a few certs might help put people at ease. A 4 year degree (in a CS field) would be better. You might want to start out fixing peoples windows boxes, and installing some version of Linux on their box too, with their permission. There are bunches of people who will pay you to "speed up" their windows box, get rid of malware and stuff, and it's a start in the consulting biz. Enough to get a few references anyway. Good luck with that....

Consulting is a bit of a sideline of mine, along with fixing people's Windows boxes (very easy work there). If they'll pay you, you're ready.

The company for whom I drive truck regularly pays me to help out with their network problems and have tossed a few referrals my way with some other local businesses. The trick is to build a reputation. Word of mouth will bring you far more business than anything else.
