I am so fed up with Windows
 

I am awaiting a hard drive to finally put linux on my main computer. Windows just crashed and it would not shutdown. The screen was doing some strange things. It was a bunch of dots that were getting bigger and smaller every so often. Windows ME, which I'm using, is probably the worst os that I have ever seen. I am just mad.:mad: I am surfing with mozilla firebird and all of a sudden I lose some great website I found. Isn't this great.:rolleyes: Every time I get on my computer it will crash if I'm on too long. My software firewall always fails after a while so I have to restart the computer. My computer is a great but the operating system just sucks.:eek:

my worst windows nightmare? trying to run win98 on a 100mhz pentium with the bare minimum amount of ram and a 1gb hd... not my machine,my mom's, but i had to help her as she's computer illeterate and it was frustrating

Really?:scratch: Have'nt you ever had it crash right in the middle of an important document? I know I have. What kind of windows do you use because ME is terrrible. If you have it and have not had any problems what so ever you must tell everyone your secret.:)

If someone hasn't had any problems with any version of windows, what are they doing on their computer? Not much. Certainly not installing programs, hardware, or multi-tasking. I haven't seen one version of Windows I haven't had a problem with. That includes: 3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 Professional, and XP. Of course, I have problems with Linux too. I just find it easier to fix them :)

Try installing Windows on systems from various manufacturers. Better have additional hardware driver disks handy. Windows is not as plug and play as many say. No telling how many different CDROM's the setup can't find. Pop in a Red Hat CD and no problem. Not to mention sound cards, external modems, etc.

I recently worked temp at a place that was moving to another state. They gave me a bunch of computers for helping out. The best job ever :D So, I have recent experience installing different versions of Windows and Red Hat 9. My kids wanted a Windows machine :( And a Linux one too :)

Damn using Windows for five minutes makes me appreciate Red Hat :D

My worst experience on Windows. All of them. Honestly.

The thing that did it in for me , was when I was running a "scandisk" on my harddrive and all of a sudden I heard this weird ticking noise , coming from my machine ; the bastard-program was using the heads as chisels on the disks!
That was one (expensive!) harddisk , including a cartload of irreplacable data , down the drain.
Guess what went after it?

well i haven't had any problems on my laptop with windows that i haven't had in linux. and that's winme to boot. got my self an 8 gig partition for 3rd party apps and have 1 gig free. i've got a boatload of proggies installed. i've only bluescreened 2 times in 3 years on this comp. one was changing devices on my bay manager and the other was when my 3rd party virtual desktop program did something bad that caused windows to hang. but programs do crash on windows just like i've seen some programs crash in linux. some programs like IE have the ability to take the system down with it (don't use IE though) but some programs in linux that i've used have that ability too. k3b locked up my system requiring a hard boot. i've had xine, mplayer, or ogle will crash and take out X causing X to restart. opera, going to their forums for chris-sakes, cause somekind of cpu deadlock, disk thrashing, and virtual memory usage which crashed X. i learned that i couldn't use opera to go to their forums and i only had a certain amount of time to try and kill opera if i did make that mistake because the whole system would become unresponsive. but computers are a quirky thing. everyone's got a different setup and admittedly this being a laptop, the only hardware upgrade i've done was just installing more ram, hard drive space, and a faster cdrw. i think it's more of taking the time to tweak your computer and trying to figure out what you can and can't do. the only problem i have with windows is just their licensing,eula's, and never-ending reboots when patching. i like linux better though and use it 90% of the time, but for me stability and usability have never been a problem with me in regards to windows.

...but maybe that's because I haven't used Windows in months. :D The last time I used it was when I fixed my sister's computer - cleaning off viruses and downloading Windows updates.

i am constantly having problems with windows home and at work, shutdown my computer after work yesterday, came in this morning and there was a window asking me did i want to end the unresponsive program, for fc*k sake, not to mentions programs just quitting out of the blue (they dont even crash!! they just disappear! 5 open windows of ie, or opera and BAAMMMMM, the gone!)

The company I work for has WinNT, 2K and XP systems, and for each of them their is a link on our corporate intranet site for help with common computer problems. This just goes to show that enough people have had enough problems that the IT dept feels the need to create web pages specifically to help people who have problems.

Personally, I think I average about 3 unscheduled shutdown/restarts per week due usually to problems with IE. I switched over to Firebird just recently, and have not experienced anywhere near the number of problems since then.

I got ME when it first came out - mainly because I loved 98SE and ME was meant to be even better.

It lasted 6 months and then I got 2000.

It has to be said that ME has no friends. Even on MS newsgroups, the posters all said things like "get rid of it, it's crap".

Seriously speaking, if you absolutely need Windows (and lots of people do), install XP. It's a bit Noddy looking, but that can be fixed, and lots of people do it down but I quite like it. It's never crashed yet on me.

Just had one:
Opera caused an error in opera.exe. Opera will now close.
It happened twice in a row.
