I find that easytether (on google play) is a good option for usb tethering. There is free (as in free beer) trial version with some limitations, but I ended up paying a one off fee for the "pro" version and have been using it very happily for close to two years. Works fine for me on Debian (have to install a closed source deb) and is supposed to work on windows and mac too.

I'm not sure about Sprint but last month I bought a new laptop (Win8) for my sisters company and my Google Nexus simply worked on plug-in, also works fine on my laptop with Ubuntu 13.04. I should add I pay for tethering to Verizon.

Well my galaxy s4 has tethering within networks setup. I turn it on and no luck. What kind of connection will it show up as in windows?could it be win pulls an ip address of a wireless router I dont have acess to which prevents me from connecting out my usb port?

used easy tether
downloaded easytether lite then upgraded to the standard version for 10. it has proven rock solid and works thus far on mint and Ubuntu.
