How to pronounce the word `daemon'?

How to pronouce `daemon'?

pronouced as [demn]( demon ), or [dimn]( dimon )?

I am not an Enlish-Native, so , need some formal answer.

Thank you very much!

personally i say "Day-mon" because of the extra A, but i expect i'm wrong, so "Dee-mon" would be more accurate, pronounced exactly the same as Demon.

I searched on wikipedia and dictionary.com. It seems like you pronounce it like the word "demon" as in the devil.

According to dictionary.com ( http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=daemon )
It is pronunced something like Diiimen.
It you check the url it says the the Daemon is pronunced as "Bee" (continuous iiii) and that
the daemon is pronunced as "about, item" (so something like "e")

I guess this is the right pronunciation. People (including me) tend to pronounce it as "Diiimon"

So I have to call my tftpd daemon an tftpd about item!? lol

TruckStuff 09-16-2005 09:00 AM

Its pronounced like "demon" (see http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=daemon).

Another commonly mispronounced linux term is "gnu." According to the gnu home page (http://www.gnu.org/), its pronounced "guh-noo", not "new". Also, "gnome" is pronounced "guh-nom", not "nom" (see this discussion: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome.../msg00712.html) ;)

I used bold letters.
Did you visit the url ?
I meant the "o" in daemon is pronunced as "e" (like in "about, item")

Ohh I see! I get it now :-)

Not technical, merely General. Get thee to General, foul daemons and gnomes! :D

I pronounce GNU as 'guh-noo', but I absolutely refuse to say 'guh-nome'. There needs to be an official PR office for open source. That way when you come up with a horrible, horrible name they will stop you from making a mistake......

logosys 09-17-2005 12:56 AM

I've always wondered that, of ANY letter that GNU could have used, they chose G. Why not A? Or E?

No, it had to be GNU's Not Unix.....
Wouldn't ANU or ENU have been easier?

Of course, I had a professor balk at me the other day when I said FOSS (like Floss without the 'L') - apparently that means something dirty in his home country....

Shade 09-17-2005 03:15 AM

I've always pronounced it 'day-men' or 'day-mon'. Your dictionary.com or merriam-webster won't stop me either ;)

Same, ive always pronounced it as 'Day-mon'... i doubt that'll change, its just habit.
