How to pronounce Gentoo?

Is it "gentoo" or "jentoo"?
And the "stress" is on the first word or second word?

Soft g - 'j' sound, for me. And I think I pronounce like trickykid - neither one really has emphasis. jen-too. I guess it falls on the first, if anything, but the long vowel 'o' sound stresses it right back up and it comes out like two words said real fast, either way. *g*

I have noticed that in the linux world the word pronunciation is something that really matters...already found forums with more than 300 messages about which is the pronunciation of debian.... think that's kinda funny :P

It's all Linus' fault. People don't know how to pronounce Linux, itself, so they start wondering about everything.

Just out of curiosity - I say DEB-ee-un but I know it's from 'Deb and Ian', so were some arguing for deb-EE-an, or were there other options?

I really don't remember options but I saw up to 5 or 6 pronounciations...
But the two you posted were the main options.... there were all kinds of ways 'cause there were people from all around the world (it was in the debian users mailing list) so... I think you can imagine how many crazy ways of saying debian came out from there!

Well, the Gentoo FAQ says this:

Quote:
Gentoo is a species of small fast penguin, pronounced "gen-too" (The "g" in "gentoo" is a soft "g", as in "gentle".)

As per what speter said, I understand from the "naturalists" that I came across during my time in the Falkland Islands, that the "jen-too" pronounciation is correct.

All I do know it that the gentoo website has forgotten to mention that "they" live in large colonies, and that they are smelly little f*****s (and I mean really smelly)

regards

John

It's named after a species of penguin, the gentoo penguin -
and the name of the bird in English is "jenn 2"

i say JEN-too, and debian as DEB-ian, with the stress on the first syllable. (and Redhat is pronounced "DEAD rat," of course j/k )

funny though, i was just going to make a poll about how to pronounce "SuSE!"

well i don't know. one syllable, as in "booze," you mean? because it's kind of spelled as if it's saying "su SE," i.e., "su Special Edition" or something, meaning 4 syllables: ess-YOU ess-EE. unless you say the su command as "sue," which would make it either sue ESS-EE, or SUE-see. ?

> or is "suse" a german word that means something?

It's an acronym from "Software- und System-Entwicklung" (Software and System Development). Thus the lower-case "u", which has nothing to do with NeXT.

Of course, their tech support line uses SuSEphones! (Hey, if you're a punster and you see an opening like this, you have to take it!)
