How to plug a laptop to a desktop computer?

Hello,
I'd like to transfer data from my laptop's hard drive to a desktop's hardrive so I could burn some of my files on a cd. Is there a cheap way to do so? Someone told me I could use a usb cable and just plug it into my laptop and in an other computer; that way I could have complete acces to my hard drive on an other computer. Is this true?

Thanks!!!

What you are wanting to do is called networking.

There are several ways to do it.

Most people use ethernet. If your desktop and laptop have network cards you connect a cable called an ethernet crossover cable which has RJ45 connectors on it for 10BaseT or 100BaseT.

other ways are plip which is slow, or serial which is slower, or maybe usb, I have never used usb. or infared.

Do yourself a favor if you don't have ethernet, and get one.
