I don't know what all the fuss is about regarding the Android and iPhone app stores (at least here in India) - my mother has a Nokia bought in 2009 that can run 3D games, and therefore software in general, but only I don't know HOW to get new software onto it - is this what Nokia's OVI store is for?
It seems most software (according to Nokias' plan) is supposed to come through the Ovi store, and if you use a WiFi connection, there are many free apps there (and many bad ones as well, I am afraid).
You can also connect the phone via USB, mount it like a normal USB stick (choose "Disk Mode" on the Nokia), and copy the software onto it from there. Then you browse to the file on the phone using the phone's file manager and run the installer. This works pretty well with most software, but Caveat Emptor, there are many fishy mobile apps out there. Choose your apps wisely, and don't install more than one at a time, in case it borks your phone, at least you know which software misbehaved.
via computer - install ovi suite, connect phone to computer with usb file, drag *.sis file with mouse onto phone's picture, finish installation on the phone. To download files from ovi store onto computer, you'll (unfortunately) need firefox with user agent changer (and user agent strings for your mobile). You can also download/install games from within phone's browser (or ovi store application).
It's a pain isn't it! It's like the vendors don't want you to have a copy of the install file so you can reinstall if you want to!
But as we know from experience, sometimes companies sometimes go bust and take thier hosting with them!
I usually try this, but I think using a desktop computer to spoof the phones browserID would be a better way of doing it:
Try OperaMobile first. Try mobileview on and off. Usually I can save the file with this.
If that doesn't work I try the desktop. If that doesn't work I fall back to the phone browser and forgo the file.
