Hello,
The webpage of raspberry pi shows: 1.) pi os for legacy 2.) pi 64-bits 3.) raspios ... and so on... Lot of things on webpage. https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/ Simply, where is the default raspios desktop for a raspberry pi? there are so much things. help needed. "https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspios_full_armhf/images/raspios_full_armhf-2022-01-28/2022-01-28-raspios-bullseye-armhf-full.zip" "https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspios_full_armhf/images/raspios_full_armhf-2022-04-07/2022-04-04-raspios-bullseye-armhf-full.img.xz" |
It depends on the model number of your Pi and if it is a 32 or 64 bit.
Pick the download with the desktop that matches. The latest version is based on debian 11, legacy is based on debian 10. |
If you're using RazPi OS, use the 32 bit, no matter what Pi you have. It's better equipped.
RazPi OS-armhf will handle Pi 2 or later. If you have one of the very early ones, they also do a version for them, although you may have to search for it. |
I have no clue if it is 32 bits or 64 bits.
Is there an image that works for most PIs, downloaded from a general link like download default whatever release version? |
Pick either the first or second download link in the posted page. The second if you want the recommend software which is a 2.2 GB download file.

I'd download the desktop version, you can always add more stuff if needed. :)

I suspect all releases feature the minimal raspbian desktop, but I heard there were significant changes between Debian 10 & 11. |
I'm not sure but I think someone once said "Friends don't let friends drive Debian" ;)
All kidding aside, you may find this collection of simple Slackware images helpful https://osdn.net/projects/slarm64/storage/images/ ... but if you really want to get it ALL, try http://arm.slackware.com/ |
On the Debian RasPi OS (they renamed it) use the 32bit armhf. It's every bit as fast as any 64bit and has much more working software. The 64bit is still a Beta. That runs on ≥ the Raspberry Pi 2 up.
Debian 11 emerged as flakier on the RazPi but that sort of thing gets sorted fairly quickly. |
For the rpios Debian Bullseye 32bit release : https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ra...hf-full.img.xz
For the arm64 version: https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ra...64-full.img.xz For the legacy Buster arm version: https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ra...r-armhf.img.xz If possible use RPI Imager. https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-imager |
