how do you make 'icons' on executable files?
I am sure you have seen a .exe file that has a special design or something. Think mozilla.exe...How do you get a picture to be displayed instead of the default .exe symbol?

What window manager are you using? Are you talking about a menu, desktop, nautilus, kfmclient icon or what?

I was thinking of how .exe's in windows can have icons instead of the default shell pic...

The resource editor in Visual C++ should allow you to add icons to the exe.
Also in Visual Basic you can set the icon for the exe in project settings.
What IDE or programming tool are you using anyway?

I use the gcc compiler and usually anjuta. I was just curious how.

There should be a resource editor tool where you can edit the version information, file information and icon for exe files in Windows. Try searching google for resource file editors.

Here's a link to a tutorial that shows how to change the icon for an EXE file using IconWorkshop (Axialis). This is for Windows machines, but if you can find a similar icon editor that runs on Linux, the basic principles are the same. Go to:
