But really I wish everyone would start teaching Linux to their young ones. Its not that he would not have done this had it been windows. I guess it would have been easier for him to bypass it. Yeah he did what was wrong but then there's a big difference between wrongful doing and sin. (please dont start a religious war about sin). And he did no sin.

I already said something about this in your other thread. I feel it applies to this conversation. If the person, of any age, does not act responsibly, then corrective actions should be taken. If the time and effort to perform those corrective actions are too cumbersome, then removal of equipment should be considered. While it's all fine and good that someone's into something, you know that playing minecraft is not a necessity in life. 'nuf said. I realize people shall parent their children however they see fit and I'm a similar example of someone who did not always learn from those with greater experience and had to go through some of those experiences on my own in order to learn some stuff.

I wish he had done so since I was addicted to the game, but he tried his best. I'm happy with how it all turned out.

We all do. And that's very mature of you to say that. I wish you great luck with the pursuit of your interests, you'll do great!

Your son is incredibly clever. I hope you are very proud.

However ... you should also take the time to stress the lesson that "intruding into, and/or tampering with, any computer system anywhere" is not acceptable behavior. Even if it was just a computer in your own home.

A computer system is private property, and what it is doing might be extremely important. Willfully tampering with any machine for any reason is never "okay," and therefore is never to be praised.

Believe me, he did. He was pretty pissed and was kinda disappointed that I did it to his pc without him knowing.

Also, when did this turn into a thread on how to raise your child?

Since Dad chose to externalize this information and started by saying that his son is 9 years old. If he's embellishing or recalling history (based on your comment that you are now 13), then maybe things could possibly be made more clear, if those points are important. Otherwise others make assumptions, by way of interpreting things either literally, or how they perceive them. That's human nature. Note also that this is the Non-Nix->General forum, therefore all topics are open, and if threads migrate to other topics, it's less considered an issue versus technical threads.

Sundialsvcs point is very apt however when you consider, age 9, 13, or 45 if someone "as a laugh" disrupts networking, does so aggressively, there are situations where this becomes far, far more serious.

As an example, say you disrupted the home network and made a pet virus or worm as part of your new software development skills and Dad's work PC was on that home network as he may sometimes have it, and then said virus or worm propagates to his work system, to his work, and causes disruption there.

Or say you merely choose to compromise Dad's system, failing to recognize that it is his work PC and has proprietary information contained on it?

Consider less that this is about raising one's child and more about responsible behavior, whether you be 13 or 50.

Check the dates, the thread was started in 2012.
