The last time I updated a Windows machine, I updated to Q4OS Linux. Baddabing: end of problem.

I believe the deal is that you keep using the old kernel until you reboot. Unless you use livepatch, but that's a somewhat specialized feature, and doesn't work for all possible updates.

Precisely. I tend to just reboot anyway after installing a new kernel, since I only do it when it's convenient.
