Hero Rat!

Here's a touching story for you. A giant rat has been given a bravery award for his work in clearing mines. He is the first rodent to have won a PDSA Gold Medal. These rats work like sniffer dogs (some of whom also work in mine clearance) but, being smaller and lighter than the average springer spaniel, they are less likely to trigger a mine by mistake. They detect mines by the smell of the explosive and are trained to tap the ground with their snouts when they find one. Once all the mines in a field have been located and plotted on a map, the mine disposal experts can go in and clear them.

Mind you, he's quite big for a rat!

Yeah, I saw him on the telly here and there was a lot of him - nearly 200mm (8") and built to match.
