Help, Windoze killed my partition table!
 

I had a dual boot system and could not get Windows to boot. Windows is on hda1, Linux on sda1 (primary boot disk). ntldr was missing, so I tried to fixboot, fixmbr. However, my boot sector on sda got toasted. When I try to boot, I only get invalid partition table. My data is on that drive too! How am I going to recover this info? Its a matter of resetting the partition table, but how do I do that?

Did you have a backup of the MBR for sda1? That's the only sure-fire way to replace it.

Failing that, look into 'testdisk'. It's certainly saved me before.

You can use a live CD to backup your data and then attempt to re-install the bootloader.

EDIT: I see you are using Ubuntu, after you backup your data you should attemp to insert the installation CD and when you get to the partitioning point select to manually format the disk. At the next step, make sure you tell the installer NOT to format any partitions, set the mounting points and then proceed. It should only install the bootloader.
