i have bought a new computer. amd athlon 2000+ with 512 mb ram and 80 gb hdd. but when i tried to install windows98 it says
error has oocured while writing to drive c: retry
windows xp and linux has installed without any problem. but i want win98.
It sounds like you have WinXP on drive C: Is that so? If that's true, then you cannot install another operating system on that partition. Did you create a partition for Win98 when you installed the other stuff? If not, you'll have to shrink an existing partition to make space for Win98. Also, you should have installed all the Windoze junk before Linux, for now if you install another Windoze OS it's going to write over your bootloader and you'll have to fix that.
Hey, Google is your friend. ;-) All this has been asked and covered a multitude of times.

A modern computer and an antique operating system. There is probably something about your computer that is new since Windows 98 and it doesn't know how to deal with it. Look at the specs and see what the "up to" details are: how big of a hard drive can it handle, LBA, how much memory can it deal with, what kind of memory--those things. I'm sorry I can't just point you to the probable problem, but my Windows 98 experience is pretty dated!
The question is do you want win98+winxp+linux? Or do you want win98 only? I cant imagine why you would need/want win98 over winxp (or linux for that matter) but anyway...
Thats like saying I've bought a porsche but want to take the wheels off and put on some wooden wagon wheels!
If you want to triple boot, you are advised to backup your stuff onto CD/USB key/another computer and reinstall the whole bang shoot in this order:
win98, then winxp then linux. The best way is to get a win98 boot disk and use 'fdisk' to delete all partitions on the disk, create a primary FAT partition about 1/3rd the disk and format it using the format command. Then reboot and boot from the win98 CD and install onto the fat partition you created. Then boot from the winxp cd and install onto the 2nd part of the disk. Then boot from linux cd and install to the rest of the disk.
If you want to install win98 only, boot from the floppy disk, follow the same procedure as above.
In any case I hope you enjoy your ride on those wobbly wagon wheels
If you want W98 Xp and Linux, and you do not have W98 now, you will have to re-install everything. W98 will only install on the primary partition. Xp can go on an extended partition. The install order will have to be W98, XP and then Linux. It will work, I have done it.

Bear that in mind too.

I don't like Windoze OSs, but you shouldn't hand out incorrect advice. My daughter has some learning CDs designed for Win 3.1 and Win95. The only OS we have that they'll work on is Win98. They have 512MB of PC2700, so I think you're wrong. And here where we live, the locals feel Win98 is the best OS for games, so they install it every day. And they can't even buy a stick of RAM that's less than 256MB.
I think I have heard that so many times that I took it to be the truth but thanks for clearing that up. After some googling it seems the only problems people actually get are when they have more than 512Mb.
