having one of THOSE DAYS !

here's a little story about a boy names chris......

Chris has 2 computers, he likes to work in his room because its quiet, no distractions, no tv in the background, no having o make cups of tea for parents. but this computer keeps crashing when i walk around the room.

so itake it apart, the motherboard is loose, and shorting againsed the case when wobled.. i replace the corret mother board mountings, and screw it in nice and tight... in the process i static the AGP controller to death !!

so now i go odwnstairs.. theis computer works, and this distraction isnt too bad... but then it crahses... what gentoo, crahs,... never.
the crashes get worse and worse, i cant use windows (need ip tunneling and remote grapical loggin, so i begin recompiling gentoo (from stage 3) expecting it to take a few hours.

recompiling fails... it wasnt gentoo... my ram is fried (under an inch of dust) i use the old memory from the 8 year old machine to bring to 2 year old machine back to some kind of functionality, but ive already formated the hard disk,.. and the crashes have corruped the windows filesystem !

so i start the recomile..... to get the old ram to work ive had to serverely underclock the processor.. to the ocmpiling will take even longer.

so i dont waste the day (its day 2 by now... havent slept) i go to university to work (hate it there, too noisy to work)... its a 1 hour 20 min trip... i arive at 12pm. and find a notice saying that the computer room closes at 12:30 today for an exam !!!!!!!

Also, the student loans company thinks i dropped out of Uni, and thinks im trying to con them into giving me money.... and to get a proof of enrollment i gotta visit the other campus... (after i know who i need ot talk to in the other uni)

Raaaaaaghhhhhhh. I feel your pain.

While installing a stick of RAM one day, I managed to drop a screw into the power supply of my old PIII. This had the effect of wiping out both the motherboard, and my (at the time) beloved Kyro II video card.

Of course I only found out about the video card being knackered after waiting for a new motherboard and power supply and finding my system was still non-functioning. That was one week.

Another week later, I now have all the required pieces to put together my brand spanking new Athlon system. I plug it all in, and lo!

It works not.

Turns out the new power supply was a lemon, and there was probably nothing wrong with my graphics card, which I had, by this time, thrown out.

Three and a half weeks after attempting a 'simple upgrade', I finally have a fully functioning PC.

That was the hardware sorted.

As for the software; I never knew that, upon closing, konsole executes the last line you've input, whether or not you hit return.

My 'amusing' screenshot featuring 'rm -rf /*' entered as root on a konsole in the background very quickly became highly unamusing.

This feeling of irritation was only bettered by the feeling you get when you put your only backup DVD in the drive, only to have mount return 'Bad superblock on /dev/sda'. Ah yes. Happy days indeed.

At least this wasn't during Uni term time.

This frying thing happens to all of us at one time or another. I once damaged a motherboard by nicking the CPU tracks on it with a screwdriver and lost the warranty on the board (it was less than a year old). And it cost me several thousand rupees to buy a new one. Luckily the board belonged to me so except the monetary loss, everything was fine.

It's just worse when you fry up somebody elses stuff. :(
