Has anyone here or someone you know got hit with the windows 10 October update bug?

I mean we expect a virus, a trojan or ransomware to delete or screw up files, but a windows update? That's the last we would expect happening. I feel sorry for those who lost any data that day.

Linux and mac can break things too, but I never seen linux or mac delete people's files when doing a system update.

Doesn't microsoft have test beds to test these things out before putting it out to the public?

I'm happy I don't use windows anymore.

Remember folks, backup your data ESPECIALLY if you're a windows 10 user.

This isn't the first time. I'm pretty sure I heard of it happening before.

The 'data loss' bug seems like a Windows ZIP bug. How/why did anyone break that‽

The Forbes piece suggests you use WinRar instead, which I'm going to disagree with. Skip that and head right to 7z or PeaZip. I mean, use WinRar if you're between a rock and getting your files out of a rarchive, but there's no reason to use it for anything new.

Got bit by a windoze "upgrade" to 1809 bug - system kept failing update then would only bluescreen during boot. Recovery graciously deleted all user data despite choosing "save all user data". After 2 tries, I disabled updates completely ,until micro$oft graciously put a little icon on my desktop that was to a "windows upgrade tool". That did, amazingly enough, work, but by then I was so disgusted after 25 years of ugliness and bad behavior to dump it completely, I tossed my install media and now own a PS4 for gaming. This laptop runs windoze 10 simply for the purpose of using adobe acrobat. not good for anything else, except posting here while at work...

I have windows 10 confined to a rarely used VM, as the alternative (Vista) is EOL. Keeping it off for the moment.

Every time I open it, it updates. Are they going to fix this or do I have to do something? Mind you, losing all personal data in Windows 10 wouldn't cost me a thought. I don't have any! I didn't even give it my name

I saw a youtube video that someone said MS knew of this bug months ago and still release it to the wild.

I don't know if this person source's are credible, but if MS knew about this bug, shame on them.

I suspect most of the updates are security related. Incremental updates are not a bad thing if implemented correctly. The problem is I am not sure they are. I can see if Microsoft updates caused some issue with third-party software because they may not have anticipated that and can't test every piece of software on the planet. When updates cause problems with the core OS, that's their fault for not testing enough. Their schedules are driven by profit so I guess this is to be expected. Very sad that one of the largest software companies on the planet can flood the market with trash and everyone just accepts it like it's normal.

Because Mickeysoft has been doing this since day one, so it is nothing new. That people seem to accept it and not rebel, is what troubles me. Mickeysoft has never been a good "corporate citizen" and there have been references to their behavior in various movies... at least one comes to mind.

Exactly. I have always been a rebel so I reject them
