Question Has anyone heard of a rebate for windows?

I am a longtime (approx 10 years), intermitten linux user. About two years ago, I started using linux again at a job I had. During some web surfing on various linux pages, I swear I found a web page that claimed one can get a rebate for windows if you use something else (aka Linux) as your sole operating system and never used the other/original o/s. I do not remember the details about how you proved it was your sole operating system. At the time I thought that's cool, but because it wasn't the sole o/s, I didn't give it much attention.

Now in a new job, I find myself spec-ing pc's some of which will be using Linux. Dell will not sell the lower cost pc's with linux installed or at least without M$ crap installed. So now I want the rebate.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Is there really such a beast out in the wild?

Cheers,
Matt

There was such an idea, but I'm not sure it succeeded... It was something like giving back a thing you've never used (Windows) to have money back.

To be completely technical, you are allowed to get a refund of your money if you do not use M$ software. It actually does state that in the license agreement. Specifically, it states that if you do not agree with this license, then return your software to the vendor.

I had a small fight with one of our store, as they refused to refund my money for XP. After making them read the agreement, they finally relented. I was going to take them to court over it, but unfortunately, they gave up before it came to that.

Why buy anything in a store that doesn't -want to- deliver what you ask for, that is a pc without Windows?
I bet you could find loads of places where they could sell you better pc's for less money and without Winbloze on them.

well why not go to a wholesaler and just ask them to build them for you? I think the going rate is only bobbing around 50 ($70). If you're buying bulk then it's a great way to save money. Or if it's a smaller scale.. just build them yourself! it's so easy! I can see a kind of vague paradox in wanting a boxed, pre-built machine that you intend to pervert with linux? if you're "brave" enough to install your own OS from scratch, surely you can build the machine from parts?

I assume that you are buying in bulk & you need some PCs with Linux & some with winbloze. If so then buy the Windows PCs from Dell or whoever you like & either build the Linux boxes or search for a wholesaler.

Also here are a couple places to look for Linux desktops & Servers
