hard wired servers
 

I was having a look in ebay and some servers are sold in low price, "as is", because they were hard wired and couldn't be checked. What does "hard wired" mean?

"Hard wired" means that the circuitry cannot be changed, it is permanent.

"As is" means that the merchandise is being sold without any claims, warranties, or guarantees about its usability. In other words it is being offered in its current condition, so it's up to the buyer to inspect it. Selling things "as is" usually is done if the seller wishes to avoid any kind of future legal liability from the buyer. To illustrate, if you bought a new car from a dealer, that car would come with a warranty saying that the manufacturer will be responsible for correcting any problems for a certain period of time. However, if you purchased a used car from an individual, that seller would probably sell the car "as is", which means that if you buy it, you assume responsibility for it. In other words, if you buy the used car and 2 weeks later the transmission falls out, you can't go back to the seller and demand a refund. Anyway, sorry for the long answer -- J.W.

PS - just to clarify, selling something "as is" does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with it. Again, it's usually used as a way to protect the seller legally, just in case the buyer changes his/her mind about the purchase
