hard drive clicking

i have a 30gb hdd its about 4 months old and it started clicking real loud any idea what that is about?

fancypiper 07-20-2003 02:01 PM

That's a bad signal. Back the info up now.

I had a drive start doing that and it completely failed shortly afterwards. Mine was out of warranty.

I found a faq once upon a time..

06. CLICK CLICK CLICK or GRIND GRIND GRIND! Whats wrong???
Backup Your data NOW! Noises such as these means that your drive has failed, or is about to.

theres nothin on it cause when i heard it i went and got a new one but is there anyway to fix it? i have like 3 of them doing it and they are all newer than 6 months

fancypiper 07-20-2003 02:09 PM

Do you want my bad drive as well? :D I couldn't get my data back or my drive to work and I have found no solution.

ranger12002 07-20-2003 02:33 PM

lol that sucks ive spent like $400 on new hard drives cause they start to click and im about to tell WD to get bent

fancypiper 07-20-2003 02:51 PM

WD is #1 on my avoid list for hard drives.

I also avoid Phillips for CD burners.

Some companies just suck. I think it must be the chase for the cheap electrolytic capacitors that I read about a while ago, but the article only mentioned some mobos.

ranger12002 07-20-2003 03:00 PM

what do you buy? i can only find WD ands maxtor around here

fancypiper 07-20-2003 03:08 PM

I have had good luck with Seagate. I have a Maxtor 8 gig drive that I have been using since 1999, when I first installed Linux. My old Acer computer had a Seagate 6 gig drive in it that I am still using, and I got that drive when Windows 98 was first released.

i second seagate. they are probably the most reliable hard drives (very quiet, too :) ). i would take maxtor over WD, but the newer maxtors seems to be failing more than they used to. but get a seagate if you can, you won't regret it.

ranger12002 07-20-2003 03:39 PM

are seagates expensive?

I use nothing but Maxtors in which I've never had any problems. I've got one from about 7 years ago still in use. Every WD I've had is in some scrap yard right now, except one which I can only use as a secondary drive since for some odd reason I can't put a boot loader on it for the life of it.. :D

ranger12002 07-20-2003 05:22 PM

ive had this maxtor for about 3 years and it just failed like 2 weeks ago after about 200 (litteraly) installs/reinstalls/formats but now no one around here sells them and most places i look online need a credit card that i dont have
